Weather gadget not working- Cannot connect to service

it wasn't working because it more than likely became corrupt and the files I took from the laptop were from a machine that is always connected to the internet so I fail to see you point....my laptop weather gadget was working fine and I turn the laptop on every night when I go to bed so its on the internet.  As i said I am not sure where you are going with that

Yes you can if you plug in an infected usb flash drive into the computer....not sure where you are going with that either....seems to be just rambling....as I said it cant be disabled nor unsupported as mine is now working again.

well duh yes if you plug in something thats infected, which would have gotten that way from online or an infected PC that was online. Didnt think I needed to state the obvious. But there is always that ONE guy. So I am not wrong, my statement is still correct but let me revise it just for you :) If you never connect to the internet OR connect a device that HAS been or installed a questionable piece of software from a non credible source, you cant get a virus...happy? LOL

There isnt anything corrupt, If it was corrupt you would have to replace it or overwrite it. Thats not the case, you just have to open it, then save it without any changes which doesnt overwrite the file because you didnt change anything. A corrupt file means damaged and is missing data and "usually" cannot be fixed automatically if it isnt a system or program file that isnt backed up (by the system not your backup) like say a picture,  and it needs to be replaced with a good copy.  While saving it writes it to the drive, you didnt change anything so the file itself is unchanged and you're rewriting the same file back to the disk. So if it were corrupt, it still would be, you would have to add the missing data back to the file. The only thing that changes is the last time modified Date and you can have an instruction to not allow that file to be accessible or readable with a Date of after  XXXX date. Saving the file changes that date thus circumventing the instruction thus making it usable again. But whatever fix they used it will read that file and see the date isnt before xxx date (in the instruction) and will re disable it until you stop the instruction. Microsoft stated that they disabled it, which means they did something to cause it to stop working. Opening and saving the file does NOT fix any corruption unless you actually change something to make it the way it was. My light is back on and connected too :)

I'm sure its not the first thing that was child proof that you/we unproofed so we could use the item properly :) I can think of several things just with a computer, like overclocking the CPU or Vid Card for example. Any geek worth his geekness has hacked a copy of something at some point in his life lol. Another example is "defender" Win 7 has it preinstalled and it is your virus software and is identical to MSE and you do not need MSE but I disable defender and use MSE as defender is not user friendly.

If you would have read what I said, they didnt make it unusable, they just turned the lights off and hid the switch :) That way the normal non techy user wont be able to use it :) I bet in the future they take a more drastic measure so it wont work at all and whatever fix shut it off will shut it off again if my assumption of using the last modified date is correct.

So thanks for the challenge, but you need to know how the **** works and what the definition of certain words are and how it applies, like "corrupt" the config.xml file is NOT corrupt. Besides if it were corrupt what are the odds that everyones config.xml file becomes corrupt at th same time causing the same failure? There are over 1000,000 files on any given hard drive, I'd say its highly unlikely bordering on impossible that we all have the same problem at the same time, with the same file, right after MS says they disabled it...HUMMM! 2+2 still equals 4 :)

Hmmm you seem to think this is some sort of competition...when I copied across the files from the laptop, the pc did ask me if I wanted to overwrite the original files so again I fail to see your point.  You were not here when  I performed the task so how would can you comment that it didn't ask me to overwrite. You keep mentioning that its not possible for a file to become corrupt without the aid of the internet....I can name many ways that a file can become corrupt without the aid of the internet and anyone with (what was the term) any "geekness" (I prefer a good memory) has hacked a copy of something (not sure how you are defining "hacked') . Anyway seeing as updates are turned off on my desktop pc I am not sure how the "turned the light off' on one pc and not the other....again I believe they did become corrupt and yes its possible for 100,000 pc's to get the same problem all at once lol...dunno if you wanna argue that point either but in conclusion....thanks to who ever came up with the solution but seeing as none of the files were edited to "hack" the gadget back into working but rather files from a working gadget system were used to replace non-working files then I see this as a local problem and not a system wide problem. Sorry if this got your goat up but I am only working off my own logic.  I did not alter any files from the working system before I copied and overwrote the other files on my desktop.

No...I read enough and fixed the problem by overwriting, obviously, corrupt files...one system never had any problem so I fail to see how it could have been turned off....sensationalism ....now that's what works :) and writing in really big letters, that would give you a **** :)

And seeing as you are not present a my system you could never know what the problem was.  I now realise that this is not an official Microsoft site lol but a wannabe look alike.

Remove the gadget. Disable Firewall. Add the gadget. If it connects, it's a firewall configuration issue.

Just looks like a promotion for windows 8 ....the link shows me "we removed gadgets because of security issues but hey if you BUY windows 8 you wont have this problem...sorry still not convinced
