original title: Weather gadget not working !!

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 - bit and my weather gadget is not working, it is displaying a message "Cannot connect to service .

I have also tried by turning off firewall and antivirus but it still don't works for me .

Update:

Microsoft has DISABLED the weather and currency gadgets via a recent Security Update, due to concerns over the vulnerability associated with these gadgets running on your computer. You can read more about it here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2719662 . Adjusting your computer's settings and all these other "suggestions" people are making, will NOT work. The function has been REMOVED from the operating system. It has also been removed from the Windows 8 operating system. There are "theorists" that either agree that there is a security issue within the gadgets or Microsoft just does not want to support gadgets (usually third party software) and thus, has disabled them in Windows 7 and eliminated them in Windows 8.

Thanks to DaveNYC for the Info. Spread the word because many people are facing this problem just like you.

To all having this problem, the following worked for me:

After eading all kind of solutions, I changed the config.xml file according instructions and then I got connected but only to my own location (in my case Amsterdam). Tried everything else, no results, till I only give the exact zip code for the place I like to see the weather in the search menu and guess it worked, then I did the same on my computer in Greece (via teamviewer) and there it worked as well.

I hope it will help you as good as it did for me.

    Hi Karan Deep,

    Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.  

    From your issue description I understand that, Gadgets does not work.

    Let’s follow these methods and check if it fixes the issue.

    Method 1: This may be caused due to the corruption of the gadget. You may try restoring the gadget.

    a.    Right click on the gadget.

    b.    Go to Properties.

    c.    At the bottom of the window you will find a tab to Restore Gadgets Installed with Windows, click on it.

    d.    This will restore it back to the default setting. This should get your weather Gadget working.

    Method 2: Try changing the system locale to English (United States). Sometimes, simply changing system language locale alone is enough to solve the Weather gadget issue.

    To change system locale,

    a.    Open Region and Language by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Clock, Language, and Region, and then clicking Region and Language.

    b.    Click the Formats tab, and then, in the Format list, select the locale to use for the display of the date, time, currency, and measurements.

    Also, refer to the suggestions from this link.

    Thanks, Anders. Your solution worked and is the best.

    Only I was lost on how to edit an xml file, till I figured it out. To those who might also wonder, just right click on the file and chose 'edit' - do not try to 'open'!

    Forgot to add, you may have to enable view of hidden files and folders:

    Open a folder, goto Tools/Folder Options/View/Advanced Settings and enable 'Show hidden files and folders'.

    Or simply open Notepad first, and then go to the location with >>File>Open> in Notepad, and open the config.xml with Notepad. 

    But most people will be able to Edit the config.xml by simply right clicking it, and chosing Edit, as you correctly writes.

    When  I type the inputs you mentioned above e.g. %localappdata%\affected user\local\microsoft\windows\windows live\services\cache\config.xml  I get a dialog box indicating there is no such file.

    Just read what RickyThompson say just 3 msgs above yours:

    "You have to go into your Appdata folder, it's hidden, just open explorer, click on organize go to folder and search options, click view, check show hidden files and folders click apply and ok. Now go to explorer click c: drive follow the above instructions... "

    It's a Hidden Folder, so you have to UN-hide it first.
