Update:

Microsoft has DISABLED the weather and currency gadgets via a recent Security Update, due to concerns over the vulnerability associated with these gadgets running on your computer. You can read more about it here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2719662 . Adjusting your computer's settings and all these other "suggestions" people are making, will NOT work. The function has been REMOVED from the operating system. It has also been removed from the Windows 8 operating system. There are "theorists" that either agree that there is a security issue within the gadgets or Microsoft just does not want to support gadgets (usually third party software) and thus, has disabled them in Windows 7 and eliminated them in Windows 8.

Thanks to DaveNYC for the Info. Spread the word because many people are facing this problem just like you.

To all having this problem, the following worked for me:

After eading all kind of solutions, I changed the config.xml file according instructions and then I got connected but only to my own location (in my case Amsterdam). Tried everything else, no results, till I only give the exact zip code for the place I like to see the weather in the search menu and guess it worked, then I did the same on my computer in Greece (via teamviewer) and there it worked as well.

I hope it will help you as good as it did for me.

Ron

Why do you keep spouting about your solution?  Are you trying to set a record in Posting this unneeded fix for Vista and most Win 7 OS??  It is you who needs to read back and see all your junk Posts over and over Blah! Blah! Blah!  LoL   If you have something new Post it but no more Blah! Blah! Blah!  Maybe you are a Robot?

ALL I have to say is:

Change the Year on the config.xml to 2017

and then set it as a Read-Only file, and that WILL

make the Weather Gadget work again, That's it.

REEEAD BACK in the Thread, and learn HOW

I don't care about Vista since this thread has been, and am, about Win7.

But since I'm at Win10 now, I do not any longer have this problem, so it might be smart of people, including you, to consider getting the FREE update to Win10 ...

There are (Weather-) Gadgets that works perfectly fine with Win10!

Anders, you need to read back as this thread is about the Weather Gadget not Win 7!!  Sorry you are at Win 10, so why are you still Posting then your same old unproven Post???  Now, you can start paying for Win 10 and any extras including Gadgets!!  LoL

Anders, your fix may work for Win 7, but is unneeded for Win Vista!!

That's not true, Mitch. You're only right at the weather location search point, where the gadgets have started shuffling even between weather data providers. There is a current difference here between Vista and 7, but this may change as soon as tomorrow. It's not related to any update. Do a test install of Windows 7 RTM.

As for Vista, again: If you have a working gadget left, there is a configuration file to be found under Temporary Internet Files, this time called config.xml as its equivalent in the other directory. You just have to create a new user account on that machine to create a non-working gadget.

    Regards, VZ

OK,  so why is my Vista Computer working fine or perfect and the Win 7 machine is not and will not search for new locations by name???  The Win 7 machine just did not break itself, so I think you are wrong here as the Vista proves it was a MS Update that caused it as it worked fine or perfect before MS did one its Updates!  Also, why would the weather Gadget shuffle between weather data providers and not just pick one that works???  You're in denial about MS not breaking the search feature as its too apparent!  Sorry, but you need a better explanation???
