Update:

Microsoft has DISABLED the weather and currency gadgets via a recent Security Update, due to concerns over the vulnerability associated with these gadgets running on your computer. You can read more about it here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2719662 . Adjusting your computer's settings and all these other "suggestions" people are making, will NOT work. The function has been REMOVED from the operating system. It has also been removed from the Windows 8 operating system. There are "theorists" that either agree that there is a security issue within the gadgets or Microsoft just does not want to support gadgets (usually third party software) and thus, has disabled them in Windows 7 and eliminated them in Windows 8.

Thanks to DaveNYC for the Info. Spread the word because many people are facing this problem just like you.

To all having this problem, the following worked for me:

After eading all kind of solutions, I changed the config.xml file according instructions and then I got connected but only to my own location (in my case Amsterdam). Tried everything else, no results, till I only give the exact zip code for the place I like to see the weather in the search menu and guess it worked, then I did the same on my computer in Greece (via teamviewer) and there it worked as well.

I hope it will help you as good as it did for me.

Ron

RE: Excerpt from Your 5 Mar 13 reply above: "I also read on numerous sites that Microsoft disabled the weather and currency gadget in a recent Windows update. I can confirm that this is NOT true. " (Your Claim is disputed below and is not true!)

Sting251,  It appears your solution may work by the number of other replys, but I have not tried it yet on 2 of my machines for Win 7 that had my Weather Gadget disabled (luckedly I have another that hasn't had the MS Security update that disabled my weather gadget)!!  There should be an easier way to reverse this problem created by a MS Security update, such as an automated fix or a file to restore the changed items you list to correct the problem!?

    Bla bla BLAAAA ...

You're commenting on a more than TWO YEARS old post, that is No Longer correct...

Instead; READ til the End of the Thread in the/any Forum, BEFORE posting nonsense, and thus confusing other people, Thanx!

ALL one has to do, is to change the Date = Year, to like 2017, on the config.xml, and then set the config.xml to be Read-Only.

The path in my system are:

    C:\Users*Your_Own_Windows_User_Name*\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Services\Cache

    And when there, just:

Change the Year on the config.xml to 2017

and then set it as a Read-Only file, and that WILL

make the Weather Gadget work again.

Kousik Adhikary ,  I believe MS has issued another Security/Optional Update since your 15 Jan 2013 Post, or one issued sometime in early 2015 that disabled the Weather Gadget again or finally along with other gadgets!  The Weather Gadget still works but you cannot change the location of any working Weather Gadget???  It should be the Users Option to enable or disable such Gadgets and not MS!!!!!!  The Hot Fix MS currently has out will not work or enable the Weather gadget, so its outdated also and worthless!

MS needs to issue a new or updated Hot Fix that will allow the User to enable any Gadget Users still want to use, like the Weather gadget!  MS has it logic and rationale completely wrong in its effort to disable or force the disabling of all Gadgets for current Win 7 Users, as this is not their option or job!!!!!!!   There is no unusual or necessary minor or major Security reason to take the action they have taken to remove all Gadget use!!!

Again, MS should be the one to offer a Fix or new Hot Fix to enable Win 7 Users to easily restore the Functionality of any Gadget they still have and still want to use on a Win 7 machine!  If not, someone should Post a simple way to do it, or list the number of the fairly recent Security/Optional Update that disabled Gadgets again, if it can be determined or is available??  Users should be able to uninstall the Bad Security/Optional Update that caused the problem and have Gadget Functionality restored easily if they have the correct MS Update number for the update that caused the problem!

MS, we need HELP and you are failing to provide any on this Issue!!!!!!!!!!!  This lack of support will destroy any confidence that WIn 10 will not be another Flop!!!!!!! Users, and not MS, must have the Option to enable/disable any Gadget or Gadgets!  The Weather Gadget is very useful and Functional to millions of Users and is in no way any kind of Security Issue or Threat!!!!!!!!!  Get over your Controlling Attitude!!!!!

I have to strongly dispute your referenced Claim above, as this problem was absolutely caused by a MS Security or Optional update!!  Both of my Win 7 machines were disabled about the same time (early 2015 I believe, or maybe much earlier?) by one of MS's auto or optional updates, as I have never installed one of their Fix-it programs, etc, that could also disable Gadgets!  By disabled, I mean the Weather Gadgets installed (I use 6 for 6 different locations) still work for the old locations selected but any new Weather Gadget installed cannot be changed from New York to a different location?!  So, unless you have attempted to change a location you would never know there was a problem!

Also, this problem would or could be an easy fix if current MS Reps would tell or be allowed to tell everyone the specific number of the MS Security or Optional update that caused this problem or that removed Gadget Functionality from Win 7 (including Win 8)??  If this info were available, users could simply uninstall the specific MS update to restore Gadget functionality!!  The MS Reps I talked too don't know or are not even allowed to acknowledge that MS disabled Windows Gadget functionality, and they certainly did!!!  I don't accept MS's rationale or reasons for the forced disabling of all Gadgets and especially the Weather Gadget as it is so useful and helpful!!!  MS should stop being a nanny and only offer fixes that do not disable any of WIn's Functions!!

Thanks Sting for putting up a solution, but I would like to see an easier Fix and also be provided the number of the MS Security or Optional update that caused the problem in the first place!  An easier/better solution may have been Posted here since your 5 Mar 2013 Post as I have not read all the Posts since then up to Jul 2015!

MS will never admit they caused this problem or provide the number of the MS auto/optional update that removed Gadget Functionality!!!  The number of people having this same problem proves it was forced upon Users by MS, as it could not happen any other way as many have tried to defend MS say or speculate other causes for this problem!  MS please just admit it was a bad decision to force the removal of Gadgets and/or their Functionality and provide a simple solution to restore all or some of the Gadgets such as Weather and the ability to select different locations for weather info!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance for hopefully Acknowledging the Problem and providing a restore fix!!!  If you or MS declines, I am sure someone will provide a simple way to restore some Gadgets Functionality like Weather to Win 7 even if you refuse to provide help to all your Customers!  I and many others may just stay with Win 7 and not risk even a free upgrade to Win 10 that may be another Flop!  If this is going to be MSs' attitude, why should anyone want to Upgrade to a new 10 Version with more restrictions and control by MS Techies and Managers??????
