I had this problem and think I have found the cure. Open up the Nvidia Control Panel (probably bottom right tasks bar) left hand side of control panel click on Phys configurations, click on automatic and change to GForce (if this is what your computer runs) click apply - hopefully this may cure your problems. TDR is the Timeout, Detection, and Recoverycomponent in Windows. **** What happens is the Graphics Display driver for the installed graphics card stops responding. When this happens, windows will stop and restart the driver to fix the problem.
The most common reason for this issue is that the graphics device is being overloaded or used beyond its capabilities.
This happens most often when playing graphic intensive games, but can happen with any process that uses a large amount of graphic resources, such as when editing or creating videos.
Some things you can do to avoid these problems:
a. Make sure you are using the latest graphics device driver.
b. Manage your time working with programs that are graphic intensive, exit any other programs that might also use a large amount of resources.
I would suggest you to download and Install the latest graphic card drivers from the manufacturer’s website and check.
You can install Windows 7 drivers in compatibility mode if there are no Windows 8 compatible drivers.
Follow these steps:
a) Press the ‘Windows + W’ key on the keyboard.
b) Type compatibility in the search box and then press enter.
c) Click “Run programs made for previous versions of Windows” option from the list appeared in the left side.
d) Select the drivers and install.

Since being forced to move to Windows 10 , I continually experience VIDEO TDR FAILURES . I never had the problems previously under Windows 8.1 .
I have a Nvidia GTS 250 graphics card .
I have tried loading the latest Nvidia driver .. uninstalling the previous driver in Safe Mode and performing a clean install.. then replacing the driver in the system32 folder . ... Still the same .
When will Microsoft finally get this sorted ?
The flickering tells me your hardware is to blame and that your computer or at least the monitor (or perhaps even both) is not long for this world. That or your drivers are corrupted due to sleeping w8 while software that warns you not to do that still is running. If hardware is fine then reinstall your software and latest drivers available for both Tuner and graphics card and try not to sleep the computer while that program still is running in w8.
I also started getting this problem starting yesterday. It has occurred 4 times till now.
w8 - desktop, motherboard is ASUS, having inbuilt video card of Intel. They have stopped releasing its driver update a few years ago.
It happens when I click to start honestech TVR 2.5 - TV display software. I have a TV tuner attached to my pc through which I had connected Set top box that shows me all programs on pc.
Last few days, screen also started flickering quite often that had never happened earlier, if that could be connected with the problem.
some 3 months ago, my pc stopped giving sounds, whereas all diagnostics and troubleshooting shown no problem
Recently, I had started putting my pc in sleep mode quite frequently, that I was not doing previously. I was previously shutting it down. sometimes honestech TVR was running when I put it to sleep and it said on reboot that honestech TVR should be closed before putting to sleep otherwise it might make the system unstable.
I have not done any changes, no new software has been installed or old removed in last one month.
I tried to restore system to last automatic restore point, but it failed to restore.
AND
I guess there is no problem in pc/ hardware because then I booted to my W10 in dual boot, and the same honestech TVR and Chris TV are running well in w10.
Please resolve.
