Hi William,

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community and we are happy to help you.

As per the query description, the computer is performing at a slow rate as it takes more time to load certain programs.

I would like to gather few information on this issue to help you better:

  1. Did you make any changes to the computer prior to this issue?
  2. Is this issue specific to any particular program?

If the issue is not specific to any particular program, then, it could some other application or programs, which run at the background, resulting to the slow performance on the computer.

I would suggest you to perform System Maintenance troubleshooter on the computer and check if it fixes the issue.

You can follow the methods:

Method 1:

Please follow the steps to perform System maintenance check to improve performance of the computer:

a) Press Windows and x key together and select Control Panel.

b) Click on **Troubleshooting.**c) Click on View all on the left side panel.

d) Click on System Maintenance and follow the onscreen instructions.

Method 2:

I would suggest you to refer to the link to improve PC performance:

“Ways to improve your PC's performance”

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows-8/improve-pc-performance

You can also refer to the link to improve the computer’s performance by optimizing the hard drive.

Here’s how you can do so:

“Improve performance by optimizing your hard drive”

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows-8/improve-performance-optimizing-hard-drive

Important: Data available on bad sectors might be lost when chkdsk tries to repair your hard disc.

Method 3:

I would suggest you to boot the computer into Safe Mode and check if you experience slow performance.

You can refer to the steps to do so:

Step 1:

Please refer to the link to boot the computer into Safe Mode:

Windows Startup Settings (including safe mode)”

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode

Step 2:

If the issue does not occur in safe mode, then you may boot the computer into clean boot state and check if any program or application might be the reason behind this issue.

You can refer to the link to boot the computer into clean boot state:

“How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or

Windows 8”

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: Please go through the section: How to reset the computer to start as usual after

troubleshooting with clean boot of the Kb article to boot the computer in normal startup after fixing the issue.

Please reply us with the status of this issue.

Feel free to let us know if you have any other query on performance related issue and we would be glad to assist you.

My son's laptop (Win8) was running really slow, to the point it was unusable. We couldn't find the reason why.

Ran Malware and Antivirus, nothing, chkdsk, defrag etc, no joy.

He had Classic Shell running to bypass the hideous Win8 experience. I suspect this was the cause of the problem somehow.

Anyway, we took the drastic action of a factory reset, luckily he could start from scratch again without any drama.

No files on the laptop that he could do without so we were in the fortunate position to be able to wipe the HD yet keep Win8. You can do this in Settings and follow the instructions. In our case we didn't have to manually reinstall Win8 with a disc or enter any product key as Win8 came with the Laptop when we bought it. It sorted it's self out.

It worked perfectly but took several hours to complete. We upgraded to Win10 immediately and his laptop is now running like a dream. And Win10 compared to Win8 is fantastic.

A drastic measure I know but it worked for us.

Steps of how do do it here.

Yes. My laptop was getting slow after 3 months of use even though it is Core i7 processor.. BUT I found a very good blog post here. After I did this, my laptop became lot faster !!!!!!!

    Try this link here:

    https://www.pntbrother.com/windows-8-7-optimization-make-windows-8-7-faster/

I was considering to upgrade my ram but I don't need now.

    Thank you.

I have seen some of these suggestions earlier. I will try them out. Thanks man.

Windows 8 came preloaded with my Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 (i7, 8GB RAM, Touch Display) in Sep 2013. I got the manufacturer to send me a reinstall disk.  Backing up my stuff now, and will then RESET the PC. I will then upgrade to Win10 asap.

Do you have any specific inputs w.r.t. my above plan of action, Monsieur Computa Boy?

    PS:

I am just waking up to the abuse in my 2-year-old relationship with Windows 8 (& Dell). Did I already say that?

Than I thought That's the PROBLEM .. somehow my processor isn't doing what it supposed to do ...

What I did was Remove the Laptop Charger and restarted my PC .. checked my power cord if it's fit in tight with the adapter .. and Voila .. Everything got back to normal.

Almost a year since you wrote. Thanks. Your answer begins  very promising.

But for all the thoroughness in your post, the most critical part (see above) was lacking in clarity.

    So you

    1. Unplugged  the charger
    2. Restarted the PC
    3. Checked and power cord???  Was the charger connected at this point?

And how did that address your processor issue? I understand power issues can cause such anomalies, but you have to be more clear & lucid about these details, at least about what you actually did.
