Two-finger scrolling has stopped working in Windows 8

Earlier today, I started having an issue with some of my touchpad gestures -- two-finger scrolling and the three-finger flick don't work anymore, even though they were functioning perfectly fine this morning. I tried updating the drivers, completely reinstalling them, and rolling them back as far as possible, but nothing seems to fix it. Oddly enough, though, other multi-touch gestures do work, like the two-finger tap to produce a "right click"; the top-down and left/right side swipe gestures are also working properly. I've checked my Synaptics options and the gestures that aren't working anymore are still enabled.

I've looked all over for a solution to this problem, but I can't seem to find an answer anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have an Asus laptop and this worked for me when nothing else would. You'll have to uninstall and then reinstall the latest version of something called "Asus Smart Gesture"...

Here's how...

  1. First, in your control panel, find the "uninstall programs" area.
  2. Look for "Asus Smart Gesture" and uninstall that.
  3. If your computer wants to restart after that, fine. If not, fine.
  4. Now you'll need to go to the Asus website here:

http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=Smart+Gesture

Then select your OS (likely 8.1 64-bit, but maybe you're still on 8.0 32-bit or 64-bit ... only you know)

  1. Then click "Touchpad" to get to the download area. Then click the MIDDLE download selection termed only "Global" (one word). Download, save, run, install. If you have trouble there, because it's a zipped file, look for the "Setup" application (one word) rather than the longer app called "SetupTPDriver".
  2. Now restart your computer. Your smart gestures won't work right off the bat after restart. So give it a full 45 or 60 or 90 seconds after restart (something's finishing up there), and then you should notice that two-finger scrolling is working again.

I do hope this works for some kindred Asus spirit out there. It worked for me. I had upgraded my 8.1 OS to 8.1 Pro, and this particular functionality had just stopped working for me.

The solution for ASUS laptops is here.

I would imagine this solution works, but I just had this issue and I found a simpler and faster solution. I'll link where I found the solution, but its basically this. Don't uninstall smart gesture, simply load up the task manager (ctrl + alt + del) then scroll down till you find "Asus Smart Gesture Center" and end that task. "Asus Smart Loader" will automatically restart the program, and it works. Keep in mind this is specific to Asus, but it probably relates to other laptops with similar programs. Anyways, here's the link:

All credit to EvilMannamaker.

If this doesn't work, please let me know and I'll take down the bold title text, but I'm pretty confident this will work consistently. I think the problem lies in the Asus Smart Center not correctly loading up upon closing the lid. Have fun scrolling!

I have FINALLLLLLYYYYYYYYYY fracking found a solution to this bleeping issue. Seriously! UGH! I literally read this whole string of comments and tried a buuuuuunch of suggestions. Then, ironically as h***, I stumbled onto the solution by mistake. Without further ado - it is this my fellow disparaged and harrowed companions:

    1. Open the control panel however you would normally do so.
    2. Open Device Manager.

    3. Expand the dropdown menu for "Mice and other pointing devices" - you should see a device name for every mouse your computer uses, including your touchpad (mine is "Synaptics SMBus TouchPad".)

    1. Right click the device name for your touchpad and select "Properties".
    2. In the new properties window, select the Driver tab, and click on the "Driver Details" button.
    3. This will open a new window the same size that displays the file path for your particular computer's touchpad device driver files (mine are in (C):>Program Files>Synaptics>SynTP).
    4. Open the file location for your computer and look for .exe files. There should be (for most anyway) AT LEAST an installation .exe as well as an uninstall. What you're looking for is any sort of calibration program, pressure sensor app, "touchpad helper"s, "touchpad enhancements", etc.
    5. If you do have any of these, run them all (as administrator by right clicking), and you should be up and running immediately. No more hassle!
    6. For pressure sensor apps, you will need to run them, and then play around with the mouse using one, two, and three fingers (alternate between tapping with one finger, then two at a time, then three, then hold down one finger, add another, and add the third, then just randomly tap around with different combinations of the three). At some point, the app will close itself because it has gathered enough data to sufficiently recalibrate itself. (This can also help with issues like accidental zooming, opening Cortana and the mouse momentarily freezing, etc.)

I found out I had fixed the problem after running these .exes by scrolling up to look for more and then suddenly realized that I hadn't been THWARTED AAGAAAAAIIIIN and that I had just successfully two-finger scrolled up in the window completely ignorant of the fact.

    So happy this over....

    Sleeeeeeep...

...Oh wow, fixing my mouse has exhausted me enough that I no longer want to do the thing I needed my mouse fixed for in the first place! UGH!

    G'night y'all.

    Thank you!!

Worked perfectly, and I'd tried a whole host of different suggestions

To expand a little, there are 2x downloads/updates required, the below assumes you've already removed Smart Gesture via Uninstall Programs -

    1. ATK Driver needs to be up to date - DL page here: http://www.asus.com/support/Download/3/588/0/1/40/

    Once that has been installed and machine restarted;

    1. Re-install latest Smart Gesture SW: http://www.asus.com/support/Download/3/589/0/1/41/
