Two-finger scrolling has stopped working in Windows 8

Earlier today, I started having an issue with some of my touchpad gestures -- two-finger scrolling and the three-finger flick don't work anymore, even though they were functioning perfectly fine this morning. I tried updating the drivers, completely reinstalling them, and rolling them back as far as possible, but nothing seems to fix it. Oddly enough, though, other multi-touch gestures do work, like the two-finger tap to produce a "right click"; the top-down and left/right side swipe gestures are also working properly. I've checked my Synaptics options and the gestures that aren't working anymore are still enabled.

I've looked all over for a solution to this problem, but I can't seem to find an answer anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just had this happen to me, all I did was go to device manager go to mouse right click and scan for hardware changes.

I have an Asus laptop and this worked for me when nothing else would. You'll have to uninstall and then reinstall the latest version of something called "Asus Smart Gesture"...

Here's how...

First, in your control panel, find the "uninstall programs" area.
Look for "Asus Smart Gesture" and uninstall that.
If your computer wants to restart after that, fine. If not, fine.
Now you'll need to go to the Asus website here:

http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=Smart+Gesture

Then select your OS (likely 8.1 64-bit, but maybe you're still on 8.0 32-bit or 64-bit ... only you know)

Then click "Touchpad" to get to the download area. Then click the MIDDLE download selection termed only "Global" (one word). Download, save, run, install. If you have trouble there, because it's a zipped file, look for the "Setup" application (one word) rather than the longer app called "SetupTPDriver".
Now restart your computer. Your smart gestures won't work right off the bat after restart. So give it a full 45 or 60 or 90 seconds after restart (something's finishing up there), and then you should notice that two-finger scrolling is working again.

I do hope this works for some kindred Asus spirit out there. It worked for me. I had upgraded my 8.1 OS to 8.1 Pro, and this particular functionality had just stopped working for me.

I would imagine this solution works, but I just had this issue and I found a simpler and faster solution. I'll link where I found the solution, but its basically this. Don't uninstall smart gesture, simply load up the task manager (ctrl + alt + del) then scroll down till you find "Asus Smart Gesture Center" and end that task. "Asus Smart Loader" will automatically restart the program, and it works. Keep in mind this is specific to Asus, but it probably relates to other laptops with similar programs. Anyways, here's the link:

If this doesn't work, please let me know and I'll take down the bold title text, but I'm pretty confident this will work consistently. I think the problem lies in the Asus Smart Center not correctly loading up upon closing the lid. Have fun scrolling!

First off, I had one **** of a time fixing this. For some reason a search in windows 8.1 couldn't find the settings I was looking for when I searched for "mouse" or "elan". Ultimately navigating through the control panel did the trick. I took the following path...

Control Panel\Ease of Access\Ease of Access Center\Make the mouse easier to use

from here I clicked the mouse settings link. This opened a "mouse properties" window that I had yet to find, and was far different from what I got when I searched for "mouse settings". strangely enough a search for "mouse properties" did not reveal this box either. In any case...

the box all the way to the right had a red logo, which allowed me to change the settings for my Elan device. I reset to default once and got nothing. twice and the job was done. I now have my two finger scrolling and side swipe gestures back.

I half suspect that these actions weren't the real fix and that microsoft has some kind of vodoo bugs built into their software that causes problems to fix themselves after you've tried hard enough.
