After many months, I've found an app that replaces the functionality that was removed and adds some pretty nice bonus features. It's a paid app with a 15 day trial. I've done a quick write up at http://digitalmediaphile.com/index.php/2013/11/04/cyberlinks-dvd-mobile-app-trumps-the-photos-app-in-windows-8-1/
It is dismaying that I had to spend a fair amount of $$ to get back some of the functionality, but I decided it was worth it.
Hi Barb,
I had no luck with this. After choosing "Photo" I just get a spinning "Loading" for ever. It's either try to cache or connect to something, but it doesn't work. Video and Music are fine though.
Okay, looks like I can get it to connect to Flickr and Facebook, but it does not work with my local photos. I get the feeling this may be because I have pointed my My Pictures location to SkyDrive. Whenever I try to access My Photos in PowerDVD, it takes me to the SkyDrive location using the standard Metro file browser, then crashes.
Looks like this is still too buggy to be viable - particularly at over £10. The saddest part for me is that in its current state on my system, PowerDVD does all the bits that the original Photos app did, EXCEPT display local photos. Aaaaaargh!!!
