EDIT: October 18 – This has been edited to reflect the Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1 official RTM/GA release.

I've just installed the 8.1 Preview on a desktop. EDIT: 10/17/2013-this is also true for RTM. The Photos App has changed:

  1. No longer includes the ability to show images from Facebook, Flickr, SkyDrive

<10/18/2013deleted missing networked computers issue - for information on how to include content from supported Windows computers on a home network, see http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows8_1-pictures/add-network-folders-and-display-pictures-in-the/bf3252f8-9162-4129-8387-5367e24b5609 - note that many older versions of Windows are not supported and that there is no support for Linux based NAS devices>

  1. Does have some new editing features

 3. Live Tile functionality has disappeared.

Edit: 7/04

Tiles are working, but images change only 1x per day. This needs to be a shorter period.

I had asked a similar question over here http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-pictures/photo-montagecollage-has-gone-from-81-replaced/19182bad-544f-4082-a124-6b7946142154?rtAction=1383566479162

I wasn't bothered about the lack of integration/networking, I  just wanted the montage/collage feature back again.

I note that Facebook Chat integration has been completely removed aswell... Yes, sounds like Facebook's doing and Microsoft being a bit spineless.

I guess all the integration in Windows Phone is next...

After many months, I've found an app that replaces the functionality that was removed and adds some pretty nice bonus features. It's a paid app with a 15 day trial. I've done a quick write up at http://digitalmediaphile.com/index.php/2013/11/04/cyberlinks-dvd-mobile-app-trumps-the-photos-app-in-windows-8-1/

It is dismaying that I had to spend a fair amount of $$ to get back some of the functionality, but I decided it was worth it.

Actually, removing of the Messaging app that had Facebook Chat had more to do with Microsoft owning Skype and having the Skype app pre-installed on Windows 8.1 which doesn't have any integration with non-Microsoft chat services.

    Hi Barb,

I had no luck with this. After choosing "Photo" I just get a spinning "Loading" for ever. It's either try to cache or connect to something, but it doesn't work. Video and Music are fine though.
