EDIT: October 18 – This has been edited to reflect the Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1 official RTM/GA release.

I've just installed the 8.1 Preview on a desktop. EDIT: 10/17/2013-this is also true for RTM. The Photos App has changed:

  1. No longer includes the ability to show images from Facebook, Flickr, SkyDrive

<10/18/2013deleted missing networked computers issue - for information on how to include content from supported Windows computers on a home network, see http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows8_1-pictures/add-network-folders-and-display-pictures-in-the/bf3252f8-9162-4129-8387-5367e24b5609 - note that many older versions of Windows are not supported and that there is no support for Linux based NAS devices>

  1. Does have some new editing features

 3. Live Tile functionality has disappeared.

Edit: 7/04

Tiles are working, but images change only 1x per day. This needs to be a shorter period.

If it were not for the frankly baffling response given by an alleged microsoft program manager earlier in this thread, I`d suggest that the app is simply not feature complete.

I suspect someone at Microsoft just plain screwed up with this app and is in CYA mode to save their job.  Either a technical error or more likely a fundamental strategic miss of how people use, save and post their photography on the web and covet an App that can pull it all together.  Maybe there are legal issues behind the scenes? As a photographer, this app was the coolest thing about Windows 8.

I never did get the system to see my RAW files, including the prior Win8 (even in File Manager), even though it is supposed to (so bought a 3rd party application that did that... but never worked in the Photo App).  This App had been the hook to keep me with Windows.  I'm no longer hooked.

    Hello Carmen,

Please bring back the services and network support,  The ability to see all pictures in one place was something I used as a selling point.  Specifically, and this might have broke with the new skydrive as well,  I have all of my photos one pc.  With 8.0 I was able to see all my pictures anywhere.  This was accomplished by having skydrive desktop app installed on the pc with my photos.  I didn't even add my picture library to the skydrive directory, so none of my archive pictures are synced to skydrive (too many), They all just showed up in the 8.0 photos app all my machines..   That was awesome.   now it's gone.  right now I don't even have a good picture viewer for my photos on skydrive.

Additionally on the photo picture hub, there is a people tab where you can see both the facebook and shared skydrive picutres of your friends..  Let's make a really great app.  What is eventually going to happen to the Windows Essentials Picture library,  we need to be able to sort by date, tag photos, edit, publish, ect..   :)

Carmen- how on earth am I meant to import my photos too! According to you there are a load of apps to do just this. Must be me then who can't see apps.

If I wanted a device that has an app for every service, I would have bought myself an iPad- not a Surface RT.

By the way, you need to tell the Windows Phone team about this- maybe they need to get rid of Facebook integration in the Pictures hub as they have a Facebook app

Oh, by the way, going away soon so I want to see photos on Flickr- good job Yahoo! recently updated the website- looks like I'll be stuck with that then!

As always two steps forward, one step back.

    Not a happy customer!

    Ben
