This is a stupid decision. We want a one stop show not 5 different applications doing 5 different things. Provide an extension model that people can add stuff too the "Photos" app but don't get rid of the functionality. One of the things I love about win8 over iOS and Android is how things are centralized. If this functionality is removed I may as well choose one of the other platforms... BIG MISTAKE!
Photos App in 8.1 loses most of its best features e.g. Facebook/Flickr support...
EDIT: October 18 – This has been edited to reflect the Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1 official RTM/GA release.
I've just installed the 8.1 Preview on a desktop. EDIT: 10/17/2013-this is also true for RTM. The Photos App has changed:
- No longer includes the ability to show images from Facebook, Flickr, SkyDrive
<10/18/2013deleted missing networked computers issue - for information on how to include content from supported Windows computers on a home network, see http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows8_1-pictures/add-network-folders-and-display-pictures-in-the/bf3252f8-9162-4129-8387-5367e24b5609 - note that many older versions of Windows are not supported and that there is no support for Linux based NAS devices>

- Does have some new editing features

3. Live Tile functionality has disappeared.

Edit: 7/04
Tiles are working, but images change only 1x per day. This needs to be a shorter period.

2013-06-27T23:50:56+00:00 Crmen, What about the lack of network support and the inability to add image folders from other computers? And NAS storage?
Indeed. Store everything on SkyDrive, where we can charge you to store all your stuff. I have heaps of very high res pohots I would love to use in this app and they don't fit on my 64GB Surface, I won't upload 50GB to SkyDrive. etc.
What about videos, music etc. am I expected to put all of those on Skydrive too?

2013-06-27T23:48:42+00:00 I hope they bring back the facebook image/flickr back. I really enjoyed having my images shuffle through my online accounts.
absolutely! without this I may as well turn off Live Tiles. in fact, without this I may as well uninstall the app.

And NAS storage? SkyDrive is NOT a solution. Not for people with Terrabytes of media files on local computers and NAS boxes.
What about the missing Live Tile functionality?
The Photos App was for many, a major decision point in buying devices like Surface. A single place to view and showcase all photos from all sources. I did some Consumer Camp demos last year, and I can tell you that this was a sales driver.
There are multiple great FREE editing programs in the Store, by your reasoning, Microsoft didn't need to add a bare bones photo editor.
Perhaps Facebook's agreement to build a Windows 8 Store App was contingent on some kind of exclusivity that required removal of this functionality and to be fair, the decision was made to kill Flickr as well? Not that I expect an answer on this particular point...

2013-06-27T23:44:21+00:00 My Photos app doesn't show ANY photos regardless of the fact there are photos; I also cannot navigate to a different location; this seems disabled.
It also has removed many of the very useful features it used to have. I now cannot see all my pictures in one place; I now have to go to Skydrive to view those, Facebook to view those, Flickr to view those .... what a pain!
