As a thought, why can't Microsoft leave the old Photo App as a PHOTO GALLERY/VIEWER and the new Photo App as the PHOTO EDITOR even if the old Gallery is an optional download after install - even if only until the built in Photo app gains all the features people are asking for? Same with Messenger, why not allow this to be downloaded after install - at least until SkyDrive support Facebook Messaging?

Yes! A uniform handling of pictures will be much easier for a user than different apps.

What you need to do is throw away this new app, take the original Windows 8 app and improve it by making an API that allows third party developers that have apps on the system to link to the Photos app. It becomes opt-in for developers, users gain greater functionality and compatibility with services they use, and Microsoft has something to offer that competitors do not. Complete agree with this comment. And can we please have the people tagging and location tagging (and other tags/rating) features back that were there in Windows Photo Gallery - this would be awesome if you then linked it to the People App so that you could go from a specific Person to all of the photos you have (tagged with him) across devices and services of that person! Also can we get back, or at have the hooks for other apps to provide, to do the other useful features in Windows Live Essentials Photo Gallery, such as Panorama, PhotoFuse and Collage. In fact, blend the old Photo App with WIndows Photo Gallery with extensibility of providers and apps plug-ins and integration with People, and you would have an awesome Photo Hub experience which would really differentiate Windows 8.x from the other platforms.

Yes! A uniform handling of pictures will be much easier for a user than different apps.

Could I ask that someone with the latest leaked build of 8.1 (9741) please post here and tell us if the photo`s app is able to display photos which are stored on network shares
