how can i lock desktop icons in windows 8

I am also encountering this issue on my version of Windows 8.1.

It happens often when I carry out the following actions:

• Plug in secondary monitor to Laptop (via HDMI).
• Set the secondary monitor to 'Main Display' (done so that applications / games will automatically launch on the (larger) secondary monitor)
• Icons now appear (correctly sorted) on the secondary monitor, as it is now the main display.
• Unplug the secondary monitor.

At this point, the icons will often return to the Laptop screen in an unsorted / jumbled order.

This bug is extremely annoying as it makes it a chore to enjoy plugging and enjoying my larger screen.

I hope Microsoft take notice of this issue and address it with a fix, or at least provide Users with an explanation as to why they cannot do so.

i fot in the Advanced Settings  but there was no tab "on screen disply". only the other 4 tabs

How far did you get?

Did you find the Advanced Settings on the Screen Resolution page?

Please indicate the step where you failed.

p.s. auto arrange will not prevent the icons from scrolling off the page, it just aligns them to a grid... this "auto scroll" function must be for situations where there are more icons than will fit on the screen.

I couldent fild the "on screen display" tab in my windows 8

Auto-arrange was not checked on my Windows8 laptop. I unchecked "align icons to grid" and rebooted. That solved the issue. We shall see what happens tomorrow when I boot up.
