MS UPDATE FAIL causes api-ms-win-downlevel-user32-l1-1-0.dll MISSING

g'day folks just want to share our experience fixing the mess that this shytepiece update leaves your windows system in

1: search "%SYSTEMROOT%\winsxs" (exactly) for the missing dll's

2: copy them back to "%SYSTEMROOT%\system" and "%SYSTEMROOT%\system32"

(64bit might also need to put it in "%SYSTEMROOT%\sysWOW64" - i don't know because i can't test this as i'm on a busted 32-bit windows 7 home for starters - it seems to happen to people who have auto update running, along with iexplorer 10 (it didn't happen to my personal machine, because i use a cracked version of windows 7 ultimate, so i don't auto-update and i don't use ie)

Same happened to me while I was out of town....

I used system restore.  Afterwards, I immediately changed the settings for Windows Update to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them".

So far, it has worked for me.

Backup restore only worked with meI had the same problem on a subnotebook Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

Due to having an additional problem with a Desktop Win 7 64 bit PC I didn't fix it for a long time.

My "solution" was:

1)

I just connected the harddisk of the subnotebook to a working PC at work and made a file backup, that I can recover some files, if necessary.

2)

I only found a working partition backup from 2012-04, that I restored to the harddisk.

3)

After restarting of this old backup, it worked, but approx. 1.2 GB of updates had to be downloaded and installed, with a bunch of restarts.

After each update request I was searching manually through all the updates and I did not see any KB2670838 - (There seems to be no possibility to disable an update simply by its KB number or even search for it in the sometimes huge list).

IE10 I saw immediately and switched it off.

@Microsoft: Does the KB2670838 not exist any more in the downloadable updates? Or do I have to check for KB2670838 at each future update request, if it would appear in the list?

Because the backup was so old, I had to update the security software first (antivirus, firewall,...),

but luckily my backups of license keys are well done :-), but still for that update reason the subnotebook was unprotected for some minutes.

Learnings:* often make a backup of the whole partition!* especially after updating the security software version

Same problem here after update.

My initial problem was the wireless mouse was stuttering though the touch pad - which I hate - worked OK.

After searching the web for the mouse problem, I eventually went for a roll back. The mouse worked but I couldn't use many programs for missing those dll files.

Avast my antivirus was working, so I couldn't use the internet - and I always use firefox and not IE. I decided to reinstall avast, but cannot due to the missing dlls.

I have a Lenovo G465 which came with Windows 7 preinstalled. However, I partitioned the Hard drive to accommodate a partition for my work and one for Linux (which I am using to search for a solution).

I would stick with Linux only some of the programs that I use are Windows compatible only (and don't work too well in Linux wine). Thus I have to have Windows.

I was so annoyed last night having tried to resolve the problem from 4 p.m. until 1 a.m. that I wasn't able to sleep and had to take extra tablets to lower my blood pressure. I am retired and in remission from cancer of the bone marrow. The medication that I take requires that I do not get excited / angry etc which is likely to raise the blood pressure.

Any way, will try the sfc/scannow

Hello! I have this problem on my laptop as well. Came back from a nice relaxing vacation to this mess. I am not tech savvy at all. I hate to spend $100 to fix a $300 Compaq laptop. Are there any solutions to this without spending that much money on tech support? I have all of my kids pictures, etc on this computer and am fearful that I am going to lose everything. Help PLEASE! :) How do I get this pop up to go away? I have to close out of it a dozen times to even open the internet and can't even download my vacation pictures. Any advice would be sooooo very appreciated!!
