I have a Dell desktop with Windows 8 and it will wake up from sleep mode if not in use for awhile but if left for longer periods it goes into sleep mode and will not wake up. I have tried to wake it

  • touching mouse
  • touching power button
  • using windows key + C
  • no results unless I do a hard power down

Now it has started to download windows updates without installing them

The best I saved for last...it will not shut down it only goes into Power Save mode

very frustrating...suggestions please?

Was having this same problem and I fixed it.  Check to make sure it's actually not waking!  In my case the computer itself was waking but the display adapter was not.  I could hear the processor fan come back on, the hard drives spin up, but nothing on my screen.  In my BIOS, there was an option to not let the integrated graphics adapter sleep.  It was called "RC6 Render Standby" and I turned it off -- fixed!

I have a new HP Envy6 and have been experiencing the same issue. Took my computer back to Geek Squad and they did a complete restore of the PC and the issue still persists. They did a hardware performance check and said it had to be Windows 8. Hopefully they will push an update to correct this issue soon.

Have you tried changing the time  setting for sleep mode? I did that and it does make a difference. I was getting very ticked off also. Go to Computor-Power Options and you can change the time settings there.

I have a Dell Inspiron 7000 15 and had the same sleep problem.

I found the answer on another forum - turn OFF Intel Fast Start !

    All is then well

    Windows 8.1 -

    See: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows\_8-performance/2014-windows-81-goes-to-sleep-wont-wake-up-unless/c8823957-f6fd-4a46-a857-d9ea176d48e1

The second problem is that with no extra activity showing in Resource Monitor, the applications like IE / Chrome, Word... just freeze up for five to twenty seconds every so often.

Seriously, CPU is only 3% and Memory is only 20%, no threads explain this hiccup.

Ignore all that useless advice about the power savings. Did all of that with no change.

For HP, upload the Firmware updates for the motherboard, the disk controller, and other firmware updates. After I did that, it worked.

Then, I installed Windows 8.1 upgrade - and the same problem came back!

    It is very fustrating.

I started un-installing all unnecessary applications from Apple Media upgrades to any add-in no matter how small. My Envy was re-set and didn't have much, just MS Office 2013.

    GUESS WHAT FIXED IT

HP has an ENERGY STAR  App  installed

You know, the certified Energy Star that is on all of our appliances?

It is suppose to help manage the energy or certify how green something works.

Using Add Remove Programs, remove the Energy Star app.

Have only been testing for 2 days, but the problem isn't the same. It seems to wake up on a key stroke and the intermittent seizures have seemed to go away.

I just posted an blog on this issue here: http://codeslayer2010.wordpress.com/2014/01/31/windows-8-wont-wake-up-from-sleep-mode-power-off-goes-into-sleep-mode-after-bios-update/

The higlights of my situation are:

    HP Pavilion 17 " Laptop

    I3 processor

    • It does not help to upgrade to Windows 8.1
    • No Windows Update has fixed this issue
    • The problem seemed to start about 2 months after I bought the laptop, after a BIOS update (update must have been around October 2013).
    • Tech support was not able to fix it, even after trying different driver configurations and a BIOS rollback.

I hope this has added useful information to the conversation, and at the very least, adds one more voice to the chorus calling for a solution.
