Uanble to install Windows Updates, Error code 0x80073712

I have not been able to install the important updates and the Error codes are 

Code 80073712

Code 80070003

How do I resolve this.

If you receive Windows Update error 0x80073712 or 80073712, it means that a file needed by Windows Update is damaged or missing. Windows has troubleshooting tools that can help you address this problem. Follow the steps below to use these tools.

Method 1: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. Open the Windows Update troubleshooter by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search (or if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Search), entering Troubleshooting in the search box, tapping or clicking Settings, and then tapping or clicking Troubleshooting. Under System and Security, tap or click Fix problems with Windows Update.
  2. Run the troubleshooter, then open Windows Update and try to install the update again.

Method 2: Run the DISM tool

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.

(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.) 2. Enter command prompt in the search box. 3. In the list of results, swipe down on or right-click Command Prompt, and then tap or click Run as administrator. 4. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following commands. Press the Enter key after each command:

***DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth***

***DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth***
  1. To close the Administrator: Command prompt window, type Exit, and then press Enter.
  2. Run Windows Update again.

Method 3: Refresh your PC

Click Start (Press “Windows Key + Q” to open Charms Bar.)

Type: cmd

Right click on cmd in start menu and select 'Run as Administrator'

Type: net stop wuauserv

Hit Enter

Type: ren c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old

Hit Enter

Type: net start wuauserv

Hit Enter

Type: exit

Hit Enter

Restart once it's finished running and see if the return code still appears when checking for updates.

Attempt to download updates

    As I reported in my previous post, MS troubleshooting tools are a useless joke.  I finally resorted to doing an in-place upgrade.  This is not a refresh or reset of Windows.  It will not destroy all your applications.  Here is a very helpful link on how to do this:  https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/16397-repair-install-windows-10-place-upgrade.html

    MS does not mention that this is even possible nor do their troubleshooters offer this alternative.  I am grateful to the smarter-than-me folks at the Win10 forum site for providing such a well-written and illustrated guide to this process.  Why can't MS ever be helpful like that?

    Anyway the process went smoothly and it fixed the problem.  I had just a small amount of cleanup to do afterwards, mainly because of MS removing a couple of programs that I have that they do not like us to have, namely Windows Gadgets (8GadgetPack) and the Windows 7 Game Pack by Winaero (both highly recommended and despite MS's arrogant attitude and scare tactics, these run just fine on Win10.)  The same thing happened on the installation of the Anniversary update, so I guess I can expect it again when the Creator update comes.

    This is all very informative, but it has gotten me no further forward to a successful installation of Windows 10.

    I will not go into the details but just make a general comment which I suggest applies to many others.

    Downloading the Windows 10 update failed, after also downloading the Windows 10 update updates. Tried using a downloaded file and installing from DVD, after re-downloading the updates -  again failed.

    For those of us who pay for our broadband, quite apart from the wasted time and frustration, this is becoming ridiculously expensive with no end product.

    Hence I shall not bother further with this exercise in futility.

    I possibly may venture into buying an official DVD when Microsoft have ironed out all the snags. However I am currently so frustrated that in the interim I shall give that other oppelating system a test drive.
