I have just had to reinstall Windows XP Home. In Explorer under Local Disc, there used to be just one Windows folder. I now have two. One is titled Windows. the other Windows 0. Why? Some of the files within them are different.

Yes already done all that Elizabeth thankyou, but you mention checking the status of Networks. I have my usual Local Area Connection showing in "Lan or High-Speed Internet" as connected but I also now have Internet Connection showing in "Internet Gateway" as disconnected. This wasn't there before with my previous router. I recently had a new one. I can't get it to show Connected. I wonder if this might be exacerbating the download problem.

besides your reinstall, there might be drivers that have to be installed also, and depending on what service pack was on your pc, you have to have sp3 to make windows update work

look in device manager and see if there are any warnings, right click for properties and find the brand name, part number and we can search for a driver update if needed.
go to control panel, network connections, right click, choose status, connected? need repaired?
Thanks Elisabeth. That worked and I have managed to format and reinstall and mostly everything is in order although I am still having problems dowloading sofware and loosing the internet connection after re-trying. Any ideas please?
correct, delete full partition and do a full format not a quick format
There is no separate partition showing in Computer Management, just the maximum size of the hard drive of 149.05GB as C. I haven't yet tried to format because I wasn't sure that I should choose the option to delete the partition which would then give me the oportunity to format the disc.
Because of the problems I had before, I felt the system had become corrupted so I didn't want the same reinstalled, only a fresh copy.
