How to disable gestures (charms bar, edge swipes, etc...) without changing the registry

I've had a Windows 8 laptop for a few days and the charms bar/settings pages that kept popping up out of nowhere were driving me absolutely insane.  BUT, I finally figured out how to turn them off. 

I went into control panel>hardware and sound>mouse>device settings>settings.  From there you can adjust a lot of the trackpad settings, including DISABLE EDGE SWIPES. 

I have a Toshiba Satellite with a synaptics mouse/trackpad, so i cant guarantee this works with all models, devices, etc. 

Windows 8 for laptop is now tolerable!  Hope this helps!

Try this; maybe it will work:

Control Panel>Mouse>UltraNav>TouchPad Settings>Application Gestures>Edge Swipes>Deselect “Enable Edge Swipes”

    I have an ASUS and I’ve tried altering the registry (Software >Microsoft >Windows >ImmersiveShell >EdgeUI; synaptics isn’t an option in mine, I can follow step by step instructions but that's pretty much my limit) anyway it didn’t help the right edge swipe activation of the Charms Bar. I’m seriously ready to throw my computer out the window. As I google more and more everyone seems to hate this charm bar, why doesn’t Microsoft make it easy to disable!?!

    On my Lenovo Twist I solved the problem thusly...

    Control Panel [Windows + X] > Hardware and Sound > Mouse > UltraNav tab

    Click Settings button for TouchPad

    Expand Smart Click Settings

    Enable 'Gesture Filtering'

    Make the size of the area that reads the gestures as small as you like by resizing the area per instructions on the screen.

    Makes it ever so much better!!!

    You can enable other Filering options until you get the results you want.

    Hi

    I'm having the same issue with the Lenovo G580 and have tried disabling the Charms bar by editing the registry and downloading the link. Despite it initially working the Charms bar comes back and flashes up on it's own or when browsing web pages in particular.

    Are there any other suggestions. I spoke to the Lenovo support and they talked me through One Key recovery, which also seemed to temporarily rectify the problem, but within two hours the fault returned. My machine is only 2 weeks old but this is driving me quite mad.
