This:

  1. Open an administrative command prompt
  2. Type the following four commands:
  3. net stop wuauserv

cd %systemroot%

ren SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

net start wuauserv 4. Try to install updates again.

and this:

a)Right Click the Start screen (bottom left hand corner)

b)Click "Run"

c)Type: "WSReset.exe" and hit enter

was solving my issue.

Thanks.

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your response.

This problem may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:

  1. If the Windows Update database is corrupted.
  2. If the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) service does not receive a content link header.
  3. If a required system file is registered incorrectly.

Please follow the below steps and check if it helps:

I suggest you to refer to the section: manually reset windows update components from the following link:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058?wa=wsignin1.0

NOTE: Important this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

Please do let us know if you need further assistance. We will be glad to assist.

I was also perplexed when I saw the log.

When I check for updates, sometimes it shows a whole list, and sometimes just the OneNote update.  But when I checked the update history in the settings/advanced settings menu, it lists as the first entry that the OneNote update failed, but all the rest were successful.  So evidently the OneNote one is not consistently blocking the others any more.  And since I don't use OneNote, I am now less concerned than I was when nothing would update.

Hmm... These logs confirm successfull update install (including OneNote).

What exactly do you see in Windows Update window after you click "Check for Updates"?

I have pasted below the last few lines of the installation log.  I don't know how to interpret the file, but it looks like it successfully installed the security update (the first few lines I copied) and then hung up again on OneNote.
