My laptop with Windows 8 Pro 64-bit won't start properly. Every time that I start the laptop up, it tells me that I have a problem and it needs to restart. It then tries to auto-repair the system. I have BitLocker installed on my machine, encrypting my C:, so it asks for the recovery key. When I enter the recovery key it tries to diagnose my PC. After about a minute, I get told that auto-repair couldn't repair my PC, and the file which is causing the problem is C:\Windows\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt. I've tried all of the advanced options but they don't seem to be working as after using them it loops. Has anyone got any ideas on how to sort this problem out? The laptop I'm using is a SONY Vaio Duo 11 Ultrabook and I've had i for around 2/3 months.

I followed the steps to enter the command in the command prompt. When I do I get the following message:
The drive, the path, or the file name is not valid.
I entered the following in the command prompt:
Chkdsk/f/r X:C
any further ideas?
Actually the command is chkdsk /f /r C: not X:C

If you can get into the Advanced boot options, try using the Low-res video option. BTW it helps to have a boot menu to facilitate that. Otherwise using bootable recovery media may be necessary.

I might have found a solution that is different from all the others. With this solution you will be able to enter your Homescreen without losing files, but you won't fix the problem for long term.
Try this.
- Open 'Advanced Startup Options'.
- Choose 'Troubleshoot'.
- Then 'Advanced options'.
- Choose Startup Settings
- Now restart your PC.
- Press the 'number 7'. (If 7 isn't working then relaunch the process and try different numbers)
Few seconds after that you should be able to see your Homescreen.

This all started by trying to do a Windows update on my PC. It got stuck at 62%. I restarted my computer and now it does the automatic repair and diagnosing your pc and states after that Automatic repair couldn't repair your pc. I tried doing a Refresh or Reset but it states"There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes were made" and "There was a problem resetting your PC.
So I tried doing the above and when I do the 7 - F7 it prepares automatic repair and diagnosing your pc and states after that Automatic repair couldn't repair your pc.
Please let me know what else might be the issue.
Hi, my family uses an envy 23 and I encountered the SrtTrail problem while switching it on today. I had inserted a cd-r into it at the start of this month for a project and selected use as a hard drive when formatting. I suspect that has something to do with this problem. When I switch it on, it shows a blue screen that says automatic repair and below: automatic repair couldn't repair your PC n allows me to go advanced options. if I press it, it will give me 4 options: continue (exit n continue to Windows 8.1), use a device (use a USB drive, network connection, or Windows recovery DVD), troubleshoot (refresh or reset your PC, or use advanced tools) and turn off your pc. continue puts me in a loop with the pc showing the abv n turn off your pc does not solve the prob as switching it on again puts me in that same loop. use a device gives me a list of devices and a option to see more devices, but clicking on any device will just put me in the same loop as if I had pressed continue. for troubleshoot, refresh doesn't work as they say there was a problem refreshing your pc, No changes were made. Reset your PC is not being considered at the moment as my mum does not want to lose the important stuff she has on the PC. So advanced options is left. There is system restore (use a restore point recorded on your PC to restore Windows), system image recover (recover windows using a specific system image file), startup repair (fix problems that keep windows from loading), command prompt (use the command prompt for advanced troubleshooting, UEFI firmware settings (change settings in your PC's UEFI settings in your PC's UEFI firmware) and startup settings (change windows startup behaviour). all except command prompt I m either not sure about or unable to do. the commands do not work for command prompt as I cant access the folder (srt.srttrail or something liddat). is there anyway to fix this prob without resetting the pc? please reply me ASAP. thank you.

Thanks for the info. I have the same problem. Following your steps when I get up to entering chkdsk/f/rX:(driveletter) it says "windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected"
Any tips? It's driving me nuts!
