Windows 7 - Windows update stuck at 0kb 0%

I have windows 7, and for the past few months I am unable to update windows.

Windows update is stuck at downloading 0kb 0% and after viewing all the similar posts around the web regarding this problem I still cant fix it, even after trying everything (stopping and restarting the service, disabling av and firewall, delete softwaredistribute folder and so on...).

Im desperate, please help.

    I also got Windows Update "working" again by simply waiting a bit. I required over 1.3 gb of updates, and the progress showed 0% and 0 kb downloaded for 3 minutes or so. Then suddenly it jumped to 62%, I waited some more and I was able to install the updates. Windows 7 x64 here.

    Another tip is to keep your ears peeled and see if you start hearing the hard disk operate as you start the download process (if you have an old fashioned hdd).

    I would love it if these types of progress bars also would show the amount of overall internet traffic that is received by the system. Especially if the system somehow would be able to show how much data was being downloaded in the moments before the user started the Windows update download process.

    I wasn't getting updates for over three months.  I tried a lot of things in this thread.  What finally worked was turning on update notifications.  Control Panel > System & Security > Action Center > Turn on messages about Windows Update.  I think I turned this off while attempting to turn off the Windows 10 notification.  When I turned it on, I was finally able to download and install updates.  Just to clarify, I don't mean I was finally able to get update notifications, but rather I was able to manually download and install updates via the control panel.

    I disabled live protection from MS Security Esentials and it immediately downloaded 96%.
