I have an LG slim portable dvd writer and player...DVD's won't play on my asus and I can't use windows media as my default program.

Hi,

I'm thinking you're talking about an actual DVD movie, not a mpg or wmv video files on the disk....

If that is the case, WMP 12 in Win 8 will not play DVD movie disks or files due to licensing reasons.

You're options would be to activate Media Center, or use a 3rd party player....

VLC and Media Player Classic are two popular free programs...

    I cant believe I bought an ASUS computer from Best Buy and it cant play a video i also purchased from Best Buy an external player.  It crashed taking all my Data the Geek Squad would not recover or even help. I cant play a video even. Where is a media player for this machine that doesn't cheat me charging me. Microsoft better do better before they are out of business. All your Apps are nailing you for charges credit card information. Seems as tho just a big scam. Thousand dollars and a video wont play? LG external player also selling you software or wont play. I am a non profit known in 35 counties. I will be sure to let them know this. I want a media player no cost on this machine pronto. Waterkeeper

    You have to have dvd playing  software to play a movie.  I purchased the PowerDVD13 software and it plays movies fine using the LG dvd external player.  I think the current version is PowerDVD16.

    Holy crap, thank you for this post.  After trying over and over to try to get a DVD to play on the media program the f***ing thing CAME WITH, it wouldn't work.  I downloaded VLC and it works great, and worked the first time.  Thanks again for the help!
