I have an LG slim portable dvd writer and player...DVD's won't play on my asus and I can't use windows media as my default program.

I'm thinking you're talking about an actual DVD movie, not a mpg or wmv video files on the disk....
If that is the case, WMP 12 in Win 8 will not play DVD movie disks or files due to licensing reasons.
You're options would be to activate Media Center, or use a 3rd party player....
VLC and Media Player Classic are two popular free programs...
This is stupid. What good is having an external DVD drive if you can't play DVDs. It;s a bunch of ****!

You can play DVD movies... just not with Windows Media Player 12...
There are a number of free players, as well as retail ones, that will play them.
I installed Zeal, a dvd playing app, but it doesn't even acknowledge the dvd existence. Are there any other dvd player apps that actually work?
