After installation of update KB2670838 Win 7 keeps crashing to blue screen.

I currently have laptop set to automatic download and installation of windows updates. Update KB2670838 causes system crash whenever Internet Explorer Version 9 is running. I restored the laptop to a previous date using system restore and again allowed the update to install again. Getting the same results as previous installation of the update. I uninstalled the update using Add/Remove programs and laptop seems stable.

I have Win 7 Pro 64 bit edition Serv pack 1 on HP DV7 laptop I7 processor and 16GB ram.

And therein lies the rub, my friend.

Allow me to quote the OP in this thread...

IOW, it would appear that Automatic Updates is downloading/installing KB2670838 (at least as long as AU's set to the default Automatic setting).

AU's set to Notify Only here so I was able to hide it before AU offered it.

[PS: Running Fix It 50202 in Aggressive mode will "flush" the Download folder.]

Can you tell us when (exact date, preferably) KB2670838 was "re-classified" as an Optional update?

Not official but on AskWoody.com (http://www.askwoody.com/2013/kb-2670838-platform-update-crashing-systems/) a 3/2/13 post says: 'Commenter FTWMike noted, “I find it interesting that yesterday “Platform Update for Windows 7 x64-Edition (KB2670838)” was listed as an ‘Important’ and today it’s ‘Optional’ or did I imagine yesterday?”'

"Maybe" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2823483/en-us is -ehm- interesting here.

While the MSKB article is about installing IE10 for Windows 7, keep in mind, that KB2670838 is one of theses prerequisite updates for getting IE10 for Windows 7 installed. It states:

This issue occurs because some computers have hybrid video cards that are not yet compatible with Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7. Internet Explorer 10 will not install on these computers until updated hardware drivers are available for these video cards.

The following computers are affected by this issue: see KB2823483 for a list

Microsoft is working with device manufacturers to provide updated software to resolve this issue. Microsoft will post more information in this article when the information becomes available. Please check this article at a later date for the availability of software updates.

Robear,

KB2670838 was previously classified as a recommended update which is why it was getting downloaded automatically. It is now classified as an optional update; optional updates are not downloaded or installed automatically.

An alternative to moving/deleting files form the WU local cache would be to hide the update as rickpelosi has done.
