Can one prevent Antimalware Executable to start hogging CPU for extended periods each time some network adapter gets active?

One of the most annoying habits in Windows 8 is, that the built-in "Antimalware Service Executable" (part of "Windows Defender") starts hogging my device's CPU with 60-70% (and 100% disk) for extended periods EACH AND EVERY time after I wake it up.

I wouldn't mind if it starts doing its business IN THE BACKGROUND but when I wake my device up from standby it's usually to get something done NOW and thus I find it increasingly unacceptable, that the system is always taken over by Window's defender exactly then and for up to several minutes! If I don't find a solution soon to throttle this beast, then I will disable Defender altogether!

What I noticed is, that this process seems to be actually triggered not by the system waking up, but by the network adapter becoming active. And actually, this happens each and every time ANY network adapter gets active! E.g. if my system has NO network connection at all and I plugin the network cable the Antimalware Service Executable starts. When - after it has settled again - I additionally enable Bluetooth then the Antimalware Service Executable starts its hogging business again. And if I then additionally enable the WLAN a few minutes later, it will AGAIN start to consume CPU!

So: can one decouple this? Running a scan ONCE after (re-)starting it is definitely enough, especially if Defender hasn't downloaded any new signatures since the last run! And, second, can one make Defender convince to strictly run in the background ONLY?

    Hello. Yes Windows Module Installer some times runs for a few hours after taking updates or installing a program. But it Rarely pulls more than 18% of the Processor. But this Antimalware Service Executable wants to Pull between 75 - 90% of the processor. I just can't figure out how Microsoft can Justify this. I renders both of my computers USELESS when it is running. That is like Microsoft saying WE Own Your Computer!!!!! What is up with that? I will say it again" Microsoft WAKE UP!!! Release a Hotfix for this Screwup!!! My room mate works in a Computer repair shop. This is the Number 1 Problem that people bring in 8.1 computers for to be fixed!!!! So Far there is no fix for it!!! Several people on this site and on this thread act like they have the answer. But they are Lying through their teeth!!! If you try to shut it down your computer Cuts Off!! And all the steps that people say try don't Work at all. When this little **** kicks in, it's like the ever ready bunny, it just keeps Running and Running! I just walk away, and go use my girlfriends MAC!!! It's all I can do. If I restart it just makes it run longer!!!! Again "Microsoft Wake UP, we are all waiting for that hotfix for this 1". I think Microsoft thinks it is protecting the Operating System, But all it is doing is slowing everything down to a SNAILS CRAWL!!!! It still allows people to install **** like Savings Bull And Spigot Bullcrap, which is Parasite Tagalong software which Kills Windows 8.1. This **** if you install enough of it, the only cure is to Reinstall Windows!!! So Antimalware Service Executable is Really No Help At All!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One More Time " Wake Up Microsoft, and release a Hotfix that will Work" after all isn't Microsoft the update king of the world!!!!!! Microsoft Don't let Team OS make you look really Bad!!!!!!!

    They seam to be coming up with fixes faster than Microsoft, that Wrote the program!!!! What's up with that????????

    Another BS service that will eat up your CPU & disc is "windows module installer worker". So it also may be cause of CPU hogging.

    What's even worse then that.... is u have apple users as friends... lol. How many people u think don't have ability or time for all this BS??. They just take into repair store, pay money to fix that they shouldn't have to.. or they just go buy another laptop, thinking theirs is slow because of age or whatever and again more money for Microsoft and all manufactures...BS. Do they not beta test this **** before they release (force) on the public??

    Hello. Cannot uncheck Power!!! I have tried several times. The box is CHECKED but it is faded and will not uncheck!!!!! Wake up Microsoft!!!! We need a Hotfix for this one!!!!!!

    Microsoft... I have a desktop which I use frequently and a laptop that I use only now and then. Unfortunately when i TRY to use my laptop it is always sooo slow because ofAntimalware Service Executer, Windows Modules Installer, BITS, and other (microsoft) **** that slows down my laptop, I disabled all of these functions. PLS fix these issues microsoft it is so annoying, it slows down ur computer, I had several anger management issues when my laptop wasnt responding at all, because of these useless services provided by microsoft. It is a brand new laptop, and it is running so slow already. Thank you microsoft for nothing. How can I install Linux or another OS!?!?!?!?
