Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.

Is your Touchpad Synaptics too? Which version? The mysterious 16.4 from Toshiba? Or the latest one from Synaptics? Judging by the Release notes anything else may be buggy, especially regarding Edge swipes. IME 16.3.15.1 can easily be converted to act like a normal mouse. Then the only way that you can see the Charms bar (using the pointer) is by digging it out from a corner. I actually had a more disconcerting experience getting the pointer back. It was invisible and its location could only be made apparent by accidentally hitting tooltip locations or by using Mouse Sonar (e.g. pressing a Ctrl- key to display concentric circles around where I would have seen it otherwise.) The whole experience made me more convinced than before that completely disabling the Touchpad and using a real mouse is not just a feasible workaround but actually more efficient.

I doubt they will, that would be admitting they got it wrong. W8 is supposed to be the flexible o/s, not when it comes to the "charms bar" apparently. I have also tried the Registry tweaks and the Shell download, neither made any difference.
Looks like we are stuck with it until some clever third party wiz comes up with a solution, or we all ditch our computers and go for touch pads, i phones etc, for which I am told W8 was designed.
