Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

Microsoft has designed it for making things faster and easier. The charms bar help you do the things you do most often, like search, share links and photos, connect devices, and change settings without any difficulties.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
I've had my new Win 8 DESKTOP since the middle of November. I had exactly the same problems as you have described. I kept thinking it would get better the longer I used the new computer. But it never did although I was able to adjust to some other changes from XP Pro to Win 8 after awhile.
I finally broke down and got StarDock's Start8.

I LOVE it! I wish I had gotten it much sooner and saved myself a lot of frustration. Start8 is what Microsoft should have made a part of Win 8 for any user without touch screen and especially for desktop users. It feels like it is a part of the OS. It is that well made and integrated. You can trial it free for 30 days and then it costs $5 to keep. I would pay much more than $5 for it as it has made Win 8 tolerable for me. Before I got it, I had gotten Dell to send a USB key for Win 7 Pro so I could exercise my downgrade rights. But with Start8, I RARELY have to visit Metro side now. I can stay on the Desktop 95% of the time and Start8 has a button to click to get the Metro screen if you need it. So, I have put downgrading on the back burner for now.
Microsoft should never have sold out desktop users like they did. It would have been very easy for Microsoft to have made somethiing like Start8 for us. I will never have anything other than a Desktop and I don't want to use software designed for touchscreen and tablets on my Desktop.
When you touch the right side of the touch pad, and move to the left, that's what pops out the Charms bar and clock. Sometimes touching it with your hands while typing does it too.
You can minimize this happening by ... keeping away from the right edge of that touch pad the best you can, your brain eventually learns that naturally because its not a pleasant experience :) ...... thinning down the right edge scroll region in the TouchPad settings, helped me greatly with that darn thing.
