AMMYY Scam

Hello

I got a call from a guy with a really heavy Indian accent claiming to be working with Microsoft.

He told me that my computer had multiple problems.

He then told me to hit the Window icon on my keyboard and R (Which is to activate Run)

After that, he told me to type in "www.ammyy.com" and hit enter.

Right when he said that, I got suspicious.

I checked their website and it seemed legit.

I decided to google "AMMYY" and I saw "AMMYY scam"

I checked lots of posts having the EXACT same thing

-Indian guy

-AMMYY

-Computer problems

-Work for microsoft.

I hanged up and shut down my computer just in case. (I"m paranoid)

I turned back my computer on and the guy called me again.

He asked me why did I hanged up and I told him it was an accident.

He asked if I downloaded AMMYY yet.

I told him this "I ain't getting my computer hacked today, buddy." and hanged up again.

I ran a full computer scan with Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security.

(Which I trust since it went with my computer)

So my question.

Who are these guys?

How many people work with them?

Why aren't they sued yet?

Is my computer safe?

Thank you

You're fine. They cold called you and have no access to your PC since you didn't install anything or allow them to connect to your PC.

Nothing to worry about. I've had two kinds of 'proof' that I have problems. The first involves running eventvwr and seeing all those red and yellow entries. Be assured, that's normal. A brand new Windows install that has never been near the internet will have some warnings and errors. They know that and prey on it.

The other one, which is relatively new to me, is to run msconfig and show you all those stopped services as evidence that things aren't starting properly. Every system has services defined that are not started immediately at boot up and may never be started as they are tied to a specific software package. So, not proof at all.

just keep your anti virus and firewall up to date and don't download stuff from sources you don't know and you're going to be pretty safe. No one needs remote access to your PC and anyone that asks for it unsolicited is a scammer.

If in doubt, ask them to prove you have problems. That involves THEM providing evidence to you. If you really have been sending them messages, then get them to email the evidence to you. If you've been sending messages, they must have your email address.

Also, if they offer to give you your windows ID so proof, don't believe it. It's smoke and mirrors and not genuine proof.

The he fact that they can be put off with simple phrases like 'I have a Mac' and 'which PC, I have several' should be enough to tell you they are scammers.
