Well, I AM my help desk as this is my personal laptop. I'm not sure what I did to have this get set up somewhere, the only things I've ever messed with were the OEM Background picture when logging on and to disable the autorun features to prevent installation of malware from infected usb drives that I interact with on campus frequently giving me enough time to scan them before activating them.

I tried going back into the registry and setting the policy for autorun to be unconfigured again as it was default and it didn't fix the problem.

I get that error message when using various MS Office products, 2010 and 2013, when trying to go to an external link in a document/program or when trying to hyperlink within a document (e.g. Table of Contents --> Page 23...) But I know it isn't specifically office, or at least I think.

Thoughts on what I can do?

    Thanks! It fixed my problem in less than a minute. It also happened to me after installing Chrome and uninstalling it within 15 minutes of use. Chrome has nothing on IE9, IE10. Not sure yet about IE11 but I bet even this newer version beats Chrome and the others.

    I was finally able to fix it in Windows 8 by:

    • Close IE, Outlook
    • Installing another browser (like Firefox)
    • Set it as Default
    • Close it
    • Open IE, let it get set as Default
    • Close it
    • Now try Outlook

    From there you can see what browser you like (and tell it not to try to set itself as default each time it starts).
