System Restore is no longer available.

When I go to "Start" / System Restore, dialog box appears " System Restore is no longer protecting your computer. Restart and try again." I have done that several and restarted, with always the same result. How can I enable SR again?

That was the only thing i have in my notes about the SR service and that error and I did recreate it one more time here to be sure my notes made sense.  I have that same error for other Services and it is usually a missing file, so usually easy to fix

Do you know if SR has worked properly since Avast has been installed?

Since your SR Service is broken, and if that is the only problem you know about, you could:

1.  Export the SR Service section of your registry and send it here for analysis

2.  I can export the SR Service part of my registry and send it to you for installation on your system.   I have instructions for that (the SR Service is not very exciting to look at)

3.  You can totally reinstall System Restore (you don't have to reinstall XP - just the SR part)

a.  I have instructions for that and you do not need an XP installation CD

b.  If you reinstall SR, you will lose all your current Restore Points

c.  If SR doesn't work anyway, who cares about number b

Even though Avast is pretty good, I wish you would do this while you are thinking about it:

Download, install, update and do at least one full scan with these free malware detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM):  http://malwarebytes.org/

SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS):  http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if desired.

    I have already indicated earlier that I do a Spyware and virus check every weekend and I never have a virus problem.

    it could be a result of virus activity. try any of available virus removal tools

    Starting a new thread was a "bright" idea from Josel Barra not me! You can transfer the contents of the thread to a new conversation by summarising in the first new post. or by posting a link to the earlier thread. I do not know why you are so intent on starting a new thread. It may be a logical thing to do when you have a totally new unrelated question but I am not sure it is necessary when you have already raised the issue as you have here.

    As I have stated, that would be difficult to do for me. The idea being that in the new thread the later contents of this thread from the time I stated my new problem and you came in should be transferred to the new thread. I hope you can help me out with this one.
