System Restore is no longer available.

When I go to "Start" / System Restore, dialog box appears " System Restore is no longer protecting your computer. Restart and try again." I have done that several and restarted, with always the same result. How can I enable SR again?

That was the only thing i have in my notes about the SR service and that error and I did recreate it one more time here to be sure my notes made sense.  I have that same error for other Services and it is usually a missing file, so usually easy to fix

Do you know if SR has worked properly since Avast has been installed?

Since your SR Service is broken, and if that is the only problem you know about, you could:

1.  Export the SR Service section of your registry and send it here for analysis

2.  I can export the SR Service part of my registry and send it to you for installation on your system.   I have instructions for that (the SR Service is not very exciting to look at)

3.  You can totally reinstall System Restore (you don't have to reinstall XP - just the SR part)

a.  I have instructions for that and you do not need an XP installation CD

b.  If you reinstall SR, you will lose all your current Restore Points

c.  If SR doesn't work anyway, who cares about number b

Even though Avast is pretty good, I wish you would do this while you are thinking about it:

Download, install, update and do at least one full scan with these free malware detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM):  http://malwarebytes.org/

SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS):  http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if desired.

    What is the CPU and how much RAM does your computer have? Right click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get this information.

    Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

    You can sometimes tell a lot a system from a Disk Defragmenter report. Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents Folder. Open the file, and place the cursor anywhere in the file, select Edit, Select All to highlight all text and copy and paste into the body of your message. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it is more informative.

    Hi Joselbarra

    I will do the spyware and anti-virus checks/scans every weekend like i've always been doing.

    Today I've posted my next problem  "Video streaming problem". I do hope to see you there soon.

    My computer is just sick and not well at all.  Erratic and slowdowns are daily fare. I do wish there was some free diagnostic program that will fix it.

    Good job!   You did all the work. 

    Take the rest of the week off.

    I added that xrstrui.exe to my notes, although I do not find that file on my system (Actually, I added "If asked for the xrstrui.exe file..." so that may help for the next time I inflict those instructions on some other person someday.  Feedback is good!

    If you continue to update and run MBAM and SAS once in a while, that is good for free scanning software - they get updated with new threats and definitions sometimes several times a day.

    If you have a new question/problem that is not related to this one, I suggest making a new question/thread so things don't get mixed up.  I can't say that I will work on it personally, but will look for it when I have time and if it gets off in the weeds, maybe I will see it and can jump in if needed.

    I usually find it amusing to let the "Microsoft Support Engineers" go first with their steps and methods that will never work so I can then step in and correct them (like with this problem).  My unrealizeable hope is that they will learn something.
