what is runtime broker, and why does it use so much memory?

in task manager there is process called Runtime Broker. and it uses over 600 MB of my ram. putting my average usage at 60% on my 4 gig laptop. not noticed any performance issues yet. just a lot memory being used. makes me think of windows vista almost bc it had same issue in past. it would use all system resources.

    Hi Mark, I guess maybe there're several apps which have the same kind of problem here. I don't have "The Time" app, however, one of my apps called "RenRen", which is often used by Chinese users, makes the runtime broker in my Windows 8 increase from 1M to 1G within half a day.

    I'm not an expert, so I just make such guess that there may be some kind of issue when Windows 8 manages some apps in a certain way, and it may cause RAM to increase significantly.

    Hopefully, seems that most apps are all-right. XD

    See later posts - Do you have "The Time" app installed? If so, get rid of it and your problems will be over!

    I'm just using Defnder that comes with Windows 8 since it effectively incorporates Microsoft Security Essentials which is what I used with Windows 7. It always seemed to work well and I'm not a high risk user for viruses... and I'm getting the same Runtime Broker memory error. I used the 90-day trial version for a couple months and never saw it until I bought the $40.00 Pro upgrade.

    No problem Jesu. I would have apologised to Norton but the fact they tried to delete my C drive makes us even as far as I'm concerned!

    Eric - Re. testing before being allowed in the Store, I agree with you but I seem to remember reading somewhere that their testing does not cover issues such as this one. It should do though, and this app should be pulled from the store ASAP.

    Whoa! You guys have solved the problem! I have the time app installed as well. I am yet to try unstalling it and see. Have been busy today.

    I thInk around 90% of the people who have windows 8 have installed this time app, and all of them may be facing this problem!

    Anyways it's hopefully solved now thanks to you guys and I guess I owe an apology to you Mark. You went through quite of a problem with Norton as a result of my interpretation. Sorry. :)
