what is runtime broker, and why does it use so much memory?

in task manager there is process called Runtime Broker. and it uses over 600 MB of my ram. putting my average usage at 60% on my 4 gig laptop. not noticed any performance issues yet. just a lot memory being used. makes me think of windows vista almost bc it had same issue in past. it would use all system resources.

Way to be on top of it Microsoft!!!! No problems before Win10.
The energy consumption waste worldwide this is creating is unmeasurable!

2015-09-25T04:57:35+00:00 I've posted this on another similar thread but as it is now nearly a week since I implemented it and it has totally solved the runtime broker problem for me, I thought I would post it here as well.
I found many of the suggestions here worked - but only briefly. The problem always returned.
The one solution that has worked for me, permanently, is to disable Windows Search. I realise Microsoft will not be encouraging this option but it does seem to solve the Runtime broker problem.
Right click on the Start button, select 'Run', enter 'services.msc' and the just disable 'Windows Search' from the menu.
Had the same issue with Runtime Broker hogging the resources on my main PC, sometimes up to 5GB of memory!
Found a fix on Neowin.net (https://goo.gl/wqs5qH) that has solved this issue on all my Windows 10 systems.
In Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\TimeBroker.
Select the Start value in the right-hand pane and set its value to 4.
Made this change over three weeks ago, and all systems are running great. Runtime Broker now releases memory when any programs or apps it touches are closed. Highest memory usage since fix has been about 4 to 5MB.

2015-09-23T18:22:53+00:00 It says that if I do that, another service called "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" will also stop. I don't know what this is, but I do like to listen to BNN videos. I have tried turning off search indexer under Processes in Task Manager, but it just turns itself back on. What am I losing if I turn it off and lose this Media thingy? Am on Win8.1, IE11 or other browsers, Vipre antivirus ware.
