Movie Maker 2012 - Black screen on playback

I recently installed Windows Essentials 2012 on my Windows 7 laptop. I went into Movie Maker and tried it out. Unfortunately when I wanted to preview something text or photos I had selected, a black screen appeared in the player. I can add text, music, photos and videos, but when I hit the play button, all I get is a black screen in the player. Is this something other people have experienced? Is there any way to fix this?

Uninstall your version 2012 and then get the 2011 version from....

Movie Maker 2011

Had the same blank screen problem and converted back to Essentials 2011. That didn't work at first either, until I realized I had recently installed a Microsoft update (KB 2670838) which updates Direct3D components among other things. Once I uninstalled that Microsoft update, the 2011 version worked fine again. More info on that update here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838?wa=wsignin1.0

Thank you for posting here. It seems that you're also having the black preview screen issue in Movie Maker. Let me assist you with your inquiry above.

To uninstall the KB 2670838 update, please follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.
  2. Click View installed updates.
  3. Click Update for Microsoft Windows (KB 2670838), and then click Uninstall.

    Hello Cesar,

    For the record, prior to posting to this forum, I did update all the drivers for my HP laptop using the driver files available from the HP support web site.  However, in the spirit of this endeavor, I did download and install the Intel driver using the link you provided.

    When I attempted to install the Intel driver I was immediately met with the following Intel warning message...

    This computer currently contains driver versions newer than the versions you are about to install.

    Intel HD Graphics Family (8.882.2.3000)

    Intel Display Audio (8.14.0.3074)

    Dispite this warning message I proceeded with the installation.  When the installer finished it indicated the following had been installed...

    Intel HD Graphics Family 8.15.10.2827

    Intel Display Audio 6.14.00.3086

    After a restart I performed a Windows Live Essentials repair as recommended.  After another restart I launched Movie Maker 2012 and loaded the Wildlife.wmv file.  Once again the audio was fine while no video was visible in the preview window.  I also began to experience random rendering of the Movie Maker 2012 desktop/controls.  I originally had this rendering problem when I first installed MM2012, but the HP driver updates I installed resolved this particular problem.

    I should also note that after installing the Intel driver update Movie Maker 2.6 still works properly, both audio and video.  I also have installed all the latest Windows 7 updates.

    Upon checking your log files, it seems that you're using an outdated driver. You can find the latest driver on the website link: **Intel HD Graphics driver Version 8.15.10.2827**

    Afterwards, follow the steps below to repair your Windows Essentials as it may solve the issue on your Windows Movie Maker:

    For Windows Vista/7:

    1. Click the Start menu.
    2. Click Control Panel.
    3. Click Programs.
    4. Click Programs and Features.
    5. Search for Windows Essentials 2012 on the list and then select it.
    6. Click Uninstall/Change.
    7. Click Repair all Windows Essentials programs.

    We also advice you to update your Windows and include all the latest Microsoft updates. Please follow the link here.
