Movie Maker 2012 - Black screen on playback
I recently installed Windows Essentials 2012 on my Windows 7 laptop. I went into Movie Maker and tried it out. Unfortunately when I wanted to preview something text or photos I had selected, a black screen appeared in the player. I can add text, music, photos and videos, but when I hit the play button, all I get is a black screen in the player. Is this something other people have experienced? Is there any way to fix this?
Thanks!

Had the same blank screen problem and converted back to Essentials 2011. That didn't work at first either, until I realized I had recently installed a Microsoft update (KB 2670838) which updates Direct3D components among other things. Once I uninstalled that Microsoft update, the 2011 version worked fine again. More info on that update here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838?wa=wsignin1.0

2013-03-28T16:22:03+00:00 Ive had the same issue. Ive been working my way through 11 pages of this forum trying reading for the 900th time that its a codec or a driver... I must have updated my graphics driver 4 times, rolled it back and updated again another 6... It was not the driver... It was this update. Uninstalled and its back to normal. Know i get to see what fix i undid, but the immediate prob is solved. SO microsoft of them...
help i have same problem
I had Windows Essentials 2012 on my Windows 7 laptop. A black screen appeared in the player but there is audio. All I get is a black screen in the player. i uninstalled 2012 and installed 2011 version but still not working. help i need to use WMM asap.
Thanx
RehamAbdel, try this:
- In Start Menu, type Windows Update and open it.
- Click "View update history" on the left.
- Click the "Installed updates" link near the top.
- In the search box (Search Installed Updates in upper right), type KB2670838
- If the results are filtered to one entry with that KB number, right-click it and select Uninstall.
After your restart, if you have WMM 2011 installed, your black screen problem should now be gone.
In my case, I had 2012 installed when I performed the above steps, and then afterward I re-installed 2011. So if the above steps don't work, perhaps try to re-install 2011 again.

2013-03-24T14:58:48+00:00 Noneil,
Thank you. After spending 3 days trying to fix the blank screen, updating drivers, checking Codecs, and calling HP support for help (on phone for hours), No fix worked until I found your posting.
I have HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. The notebook has a Radeon HD 7470M display adapter. After installing Windows update KB2670838, Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 left panel was black. I removed the update, Movie Maker preview is no longer blank. To uninstall KB2670838 open the Control Panel, Programs and Features. Select View installed updates. Search for KB2670838. Highlight and remove. Windows movie maker 2011 view panel is no longer black. The URL listed http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838 outlines the systems and hardware impacted.
