Movie Maker 2012 - Black screen on playback

I recently installed Windows Essentials 2012 on my Windows 7 laptop. I went into Movie Maker and tried it out. Unfortunately when I wanted to preview something text or photos I had selected, a black screen appeared in the player. I can add text, music, photos and videos, but when I hit the play button, all I get is a black screen in the player. Is this something other people have experienced? Is there any way to fix this?

Thanks!

Had the same blank screen problem and converted back to Essentials 2011. That didn't work at first either, until I realized I had recently installed a Microsoft update (KB 2670838) which updates Direct3D components among other things. Once I uninstalled that Microsoft update, the 2011 version worked fine again. More info on that update here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838?wa=wsignin1.0

Hi KübraDurgun,

Thank you for posting here. It seems that you're also having the black preview screen issue in Movie Maker. Let me assist you with your inquiry above.

To uninstall the KB 2670838 update, please follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.
  2. Click View installed updates.
  3. Click Update for Microsoft Windows (KB 2670838), and then click Uninstall.

Please get back to us if you have further questions.

Thanks!

    Hello everyone,

    @ MANISHPURANIK, carter johnson

I would like to ask if you have tried updating your video driver by following the steps given by Gerard_G last September 10 on this thread.

If not, I suggest that you try updating first your driver and give us an update afterwards. In case that you already updated and you still encounter the issue, kindly send us log files of your Movie Maker. This will help us determine the cause of the issue. For the instructions, kindly refer to my message in the private message area. You need to sign in to Microsoft Community to see Private Messages button in line with All Replies.

I am having the identical issue as everbody else on this Forum.   HP Laptop with the Latest version of all drivers from HP freshly Reinstalled.

    1. All files worked with Windows Movie Maker Live
    2. Now The preview just is black. No video. Movies work fine.

I just finished reading all 9 pages on this forum and it seems the exact same questions, issue but no solution other than Uninstall.

I fear that WMM and the HP AMD Radeon video cards are simply not compatiable.  IE the driver that HP has for this does not work with WMM 2012.

I really do not want to uninstall though as I need the MP4 save capabilities.

    Please advise

    AMD Radeon 6770m - (v8.882.2.3000 2011-11-18)
