Verify that the time, date/year & time-zone are set correctly

Always remember to set a System Restore point before doing any work on your computer.

Rename the Windows Update Softwaredistribution folder

That is what I got when searched around for error 0x80248015

This problem may occur if the Windows Update, Software distribution folder has been corrupted.

 We can refer to the following steps to rename this folder.

Please note that the folder will be re-created the next time we visit the Windows Update site.

  1. Close all the open windows.
  2. Click the "Start" Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
  3. Right-click "Command Prompt" and click "Run as administrator".
  4. In "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type in " net stop WuAuServ" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully stopped before we try to rename the folder.

  1. Click the "Start" Button, in the "Start Search" box, type in " %windir%" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
  2. In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".
  3. Right-click on the folder, select "Rename" and type " Sdold " (without the quotes) to rename this folder.
  4. Still in "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type the command " net start WuAuServ" (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the Windows Updates service.

Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully started.

Note: If the issue is resolved and you can successfully download and install updates, you can safely delete the SoftwareDistribution.old directory to recover disk space.

    Just to let you know my Windows Update is fixed. Followed your advice and took it to the next level. Had to get extremely angry before they responded properly. Their Techies were very helpful once I got past the bureaucracy! Tried a number of fixes, below is the one that did the trick, my actions in red:

    Step 1: Repair the windows updates files.

    Ø Start > type cmd in start search > right click “run as administrator”.

    Ø Copy and paste the command below as given.

    net stop wuauserv - OK

    cd %systemroot% - OK

    ren SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old -Duplicate file found, so changed it to old2

    net start wuauserv - OK

    net stop bits - The BITS service is not started

    net start bits - OK

    net stop cryptsvc - OK

    cd %systemroot%\system32 - OK

    ren catroot2 catroot2.old - Duplicate file found, so changed it to old2

    net start cryptsvc - OK

    regsvr32 Softpub.dll /s - OK

    regsvr32 Wintrust.dll /s - OK

    regsvr32 Initpki.dll /s - OK

    regsvr32 Mssip32.dll /s - OK

    Ø Restart the computer. Success, Windows update now working, didn't bother to go to Step 2.

    Step 2: Run the FIX IT for windows update component.

    Ø From the link below please run the FIXIT for reset windows update component.

    Ø Restart the computer.

    Does this solution work for Windows XP as well?  I am not able to install the updates nor am I able to install the FixIt.  Thank you.

    I am confused by point 3 in the original reply, dated May 21: "Right-click "Command Prompt" and click "Run as administrator".

    When I open Command prompt, I don't see an option to 'run as admin".  And whenever I enter something, it notifies me that it requires admin access.   So I can do nothing.  Help?
