I cannot update apps. It returns several error codes. Among them are 0x80246007, 0x80240002, 0x80073cff. I have already tried running scf/scannow, but it didn't find any file errors. Can anyone help me fix this? Thanks in advance!

Note:

  1. I have no 3rd party antivirus software installed.
  2. Several apps reach 80-95% before download/install failure.
  3. Did an in-place update from Win 7, using the Web installer.

Hi KendallSholtess,

Thank you for choosing Windows 8 and thanks for providing us an opportunity to assist you.

As per the description provided I understand that you are unable to perform app update, it would be grateful if you can reply to this question in order to assist you further.

Have you made any changes to the computer to this issue?

I would suggest you to try the following methods and check if it helps.

Method 1:

I would suggest you to run the Windows update troubleshooter and check if it helps.

a)    Press the ‘Windows + W’ key on the keyboard.

b)    Type troubleshooter in the search box and then press enter.

c)    Select Troubleshooting. Click on view **** all ****and select Windows Update and follow the on-screen instructions.

Method 2:

Perform a clean boot and check if you are able to install the update.

Clean Boot will check if any third party application is causing the issue, as clean boot helps in eliminating software conflicts.

Follow these steps to start the computer in clean boot.

Step 1:

a) Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.

b) In the ‘Run’ windows type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.

c) Click the ‘Boot’ tab and uncheck ‘Safe Boot’ option.

d) On the ‘General’ tab, click to select the option ‘Selective startup’, and then click to clear the option Load startup items check box.

e) On the ‘Services’ tab, click to select the ‘Hide all Microsoft services’ check box, and then click ‘Disable all’.

f) On the ‘Startup’ tab, click ‘Open Task Manager’. In the Task Manager window under startup tab, right click on each startup item which are enabled and select ‘Disable’.

g) Click ‘OK’, and then click Restart.

Step 2: Enable half of the services

a. Follow steps 1a and 1b to start the System Configuration utility.

b. Click the Services tab, and then click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box.

c. Click to select half of the check boxes in the Service list.

d. Click OK, and then click Restart.

Step 3: Determine whether the problem returns

If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Service list.

If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Service list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.

If only one service is selected in the Service list, and you still experience the problem, the selected service causes the problem. Go to step 6. If no service causes this problem, go to step 4.

Step 4: Enable half of the Startup items

If no startup item causes this problem, a Microsoft service most likely causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat step 1 and step 2 without selecting the Hide all Microsoft services check box in either step.

Step 5: Determine whether the problem returns

If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Startup Item list.

If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Startup Item list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.

If only one startup item is selected in the Startup Item list, and you still experience the problem, the startup item that is selected in the list is the service that is causing the problem. Go to step 6.

If no startup item causes this problem, a Microsoft service most likely causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat step 1 and step 2 without selecting the Hide all Microsoft services check box in either step.

Step 6: Resolve the problem

After you determine the startup item or the service that causes the problem, contact the program manufacturer to determine whether the problem can be resolved. Or, run the System Configuration utility, and then click to clear the check box for the problem item.

Step 7:

Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to boot to normal startup.

a) Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.

b) In the ‘Run’ windows type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.

c) On the ‘General’ tab, click the ‘Normal Startup’ option, and then click ‘OK’.

d) When you are prompted to restart the computer, click ‘Restart’.

I get the same error after I download it the latest build for Windows 10 Enterprise Technical Preview 10049.

this problem occurs with windows 10 build 10049 and I have the potential solution  searching for a solution to this problem and i found a very simple way to remedy the mail and calendar /people app failing to update and other apps

1.open windows power shell  in administrator

  1. enter the following command  Get-appxprovisionedpackage –online | where-object {$_.packagename –like “*windowscommunicationsapps*”} | remove-appxprovisionedpackage –online
  2. reinstall the app from the store (green tile NOT BETA)

hope this helps:)

Thanks. Your advice worked. Good thing I scrolled down and hesitated to follow what that Microsoft person asks someone to do.

Just to add my bit to this on going conversation.

I have has two issues with the app store since doing my clean install of Windows 8.

Firstly, I'm on a Server 2008 R2 domain and the network policies automatically disable the Windows Firewall. (We have several enterprise hardware boxes that do a much better job and we can now manage all our clients with ease!)

After discovering that you couldn't use the App Store at all without having the Windows Firewall service running and on Automatic, {I was pulling my hair out with management nightmares.)

I did, however, discover that the Windows Firewall service will run, even when the options are all turned off in the control panel. Phew!

Then to my horror, after downloading apps with out any issue, I was getting an update error. (0x80246007)

Now, I know for a fact that ANY email address can be used as a Microsoft Passport, you don't have to use @hotmail, @live, @outlook or @msn.

You can '@[insert-your-weird-domain.com]' as long as you register it as a Microsoft Passport.(http://login.passport.com).

So, I already had my Microsoft Passport, which is my company email address, from where I have used lots of other Microsoft services and I had attached the email address to my domain account, so where was the problem?

The problem was that they had different passwords! It would appear that Microsoft expect you keep your passwords in sync with your two accounts, so if your domain account password changes, then you must update your Microsoft Passport password to match. (Nothing like network security!)

Having done this, I can now download and update apps from the Store without any issues.

I hope this is of use to anyone going through similar issues.

    Cheers,

    Barry.

For me it was disabling McAfee firewall, then all apps were updated with no problem.
