In the end my issue was resolved with patience.  2 days of having the windows updates running and my laptop has been fully updated.

Not sure if this works where the normal Windows Update is inactive but have noticed on both my Win7 and Win8 machines that Advanced System Care from Iobit looks for and implements outstanding important system updates as well as keeping PC system healthy.

    A free version is available.

I had a hard drive die so I had to replace it and re-install Windows 7. 166 Important Windows Updates are listed, but won't download and install. I even tried just downloading 1 at a time but I can't get any of them. I let it run all night trying to download just 1 update that was 41 Kb but I got nothing. It seems pretty messed up to me. I think they want to force us all to get windows 10, but I don't want it, I'll run Linux before I go windows 10.
