I tried the Windows 7 drivers but it doesn't work on 8. How do I get it to work on Windows 8 x64?

Hi, I thought I better sign up in case people are still having problems I was in the same boat but I just managed to work it out and have my receiver running and working on Win 8.

There isn't much to explain really,

1- grab the latest software from here and install it

I used the Windows 7 x64

2- Plug Wireless receiver into USB2 port I'm not 100% sure but I don't think they work with USB3

3- go to control panel > device manager and right click on unknown device then update driver software

4- Click "Browse for driver software on your computer"

5- Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"

6- Then in the left column click Microsoft and it should show a list in the right column scroll all the way down to the bottom and you should see,

Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver For Windows 6.2.9200.16384 [25/7/2012]

7- Highlight that driver and ok/next and it will give you a message saying that it is not recommended or words to that extent, click ok let it install

8- Check in device manager and it should be installed and you should be able to pair your controller with the receiver as you would on Windows 7

9- Now go to the start menu and click the Microsoft Xbox 360 Accessories Status app and check the controller is paired by pressing the guide button.

And that's it I'm sorry if I made it a bit long winded but I thought I might as well cover everything in case someone needs to install one that has never installed one at all before.

I have this post on notify and plenty time on my hands so I will check back to see if anyone still cant install it but I'm pretty sure I've listed all the correct steps.

    Ok,

    So I know this is post is a little old but I was hoping it would help me regardless. I did everything, step by step just as you gave stated in the post. And I'm still not getting it to work.

    Previously it was "unknown Device" with that yellow triangle and exclamation sign on it. Now this is what I get.

    Please help me if you can.

    I have the Wireless Xbox 360 controller adapter for the pc and it was working fine until my pc decided to update to Win 8.1 then all of a sudden the adapter quit working all together. It now won't even work on any other computer (win 7 or otherwise). I know it wasn't the product because it was working fine on Win 8 just minutes before the update not it's not working AT ALL. I have searched and searched for a solution and got nothing but the run around from Microsoft or any affiliates. I believe that this company has some serious issues and needs to make better software and products. I have a whole list of complaints about this stuff but all lead to this one thing. It wouldn't be so bad if the adapter wasn't so over priced in the first place or if Microsoft wasn't so greedy that they would just make the controllers bluetooth enabled. 

    I have the EXACT same issue. It seems to be dead now, even though it was working perfectly fine before. @Support, please look into this. I now have a dead receiver, so I can't use my controllers anymore either !

    Thank you very much sir :) The driver has been updated by Microsoft on Windows 8.1 X64 latest patch, but still didn't auto detect the wireless receiver. It does however detect a wired Xbox 360 controller.

    I'm already panicking because I just recently upgraded my PC system (actually, buying a new complete system), so I'm a bit panic shocked when reading that Xbox 360 controller isn't supported on Window 8. So I just followed your step by step instruction, and my favorite game pad to date is now rocking on my new system.
