My windows 8 is randomly logging off on its own, bug?

If you haven't already, increase your shared heap sizes, as outlined here.  Mine looks like:

If like me, you've already done that and you still run up against the limits, the best you can do is to monitor your GDI handles with GDIView and try to stay under the limits. Browsers in particular use a lot of handles.

Oh, and search for "GDI", "resources", and "instability" in the Windows 10 feedback and vote up the ones related to system resources, so that maybe the powers that be at Microsoft will pay some attention.

My Windows 8 randomly kicks me to the password enter screen. All my programs stay up and I just have to type my password and hit enter to get back in. I am also not doing anything strenuous on the machine. The machine is overclocked though but seems stable - no blue screens.

I'm having exactly the same issue. Does anyone managed to solve this specific quoted case? I've bought a new PC and I am already experiencing this stuff, and I don't know if I should use my guarantee or if this is some not solved bug specific for my hardware.

By the way, my hardware is:

Intel i7 4790 3.60Ghz 4th Gen / 16GB DDR3 / SSHD 1TB / DVD-RW / MSI GTX 970 GAMING 4GB C/HDMI / Gab Phantom 240 White/ Fonte PCYes! 600W Series 80 PLUS Bronze

When the same issue arises in Windows 7, you get the screen flicker like in Windows 8, then:

Then there is an application popup advicing the user to close down applications to free up memory.

AL_AN, same symptoms here.

IE 11, lots of tabs, when allocating memory (opening another tab, pressing "play" to start a video/animation, etc) the screen flickers, goes black for some seconds or screen update/redraw does not draw all windows correctly.

The logout just happened to me again,

After kindly logging my user off, no questions asked, I logged back in, started IE (nothing else), confirmed that I wanted to restore my "unexpectedly closed" session, waited for all tabs to load, then  pressed play on

the clip I was trying to watch. New screen flicker, new logout, no questions asked.

Again:

Application log gets winlogon 6003, then 6000 3-4 seconds later.

System log gets winlogon 7001 at the exact same time as the 6003 in the application log.

A couple of minutes before the logoff Diagnostics-Performance logs two or more 500/501 entries with opcodes Video Memory Degradation, then Video Memory Responsiveness. Messages are:

The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.

Scenario : The Desktop Window Manager responsiveness has degraded.

The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.

Reason : CPU resources are over-utilized.

Diagnosis : A sharp degradation in Desktop Window Manager responsiveness was observed.

The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.

Scenario : Video memory resources are over-utilized and there is thrashing happening as a result. Reducing number of running programs and open windows may help resolve this condition.

HOWEVER, these event entries seem to be logged a lot more often than the logoffs happen so it's hard to tell whether they are related or not.
