Hi

I have been having problems installing updates from Microsoft Updates and looking at the error messages it tells me I need to check the properties of Background Intelligent Transfer Service but when I search this file it is missing,

How do I replace this missing file and how do i see any other registry files are missing?

Thanks

Katie

I have XP Home Edition which I have just upgraded to SP3.  Windows Update has stopped working.  It has 27 files for me but they all fail to install.  There is no sign of BITS when I run services.msc, in either the Standard or Extended tabs.

This method did not work for me, things go off track right from the start because when I run  %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\inf\qmgr.inf it asks me for the original XP SP3 disc.  But my disc is only SP1.

When I put that in and point the program at it, it copies a couple of files even though the target files being overwritten are newer than the ones on the disc, but then says it cannot copy a file with a name like bitsprix.

This problem has occupied a ridiculous amount of time.  Can anyone please help?

Hi Marbrien,

Please do the following.

Open the Windows Search tool, copy/paste the following and then click Search: qmgr.dll

Search should show that file in the following locations:

C:\WINDOWS\system32

C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

C:\WINDOWS\system32\bits

You may only see qmgr.dll in C:\WINDOWS\system32.

Go to Start, Run and copy/paste: regsvr32 qmgr.dll and click OK

Do the same with this file: regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll

Reboot the system and then copy/paste this command into the Run field:

%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\inf\qmgr.inf

If you're prompted to insert the Windows installation CD, ignore that and in the dialog box at the bottom, change the path to C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

** Change the path to C:\WINDOWS\system32 if qmgr.dll was only present in that location.**

Restart the PC again and then go to Services and you should be able to see BITS in the list.

Double click it and then on the General tab, click the Start button to try and start the service manually. This is just a test to ensure that it's working correctly.

If you get Error 2: cannot find the file specified, go to Start, then Run again and copy/paste the following command and then click OK:

Reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS\Parameters /v ServiceDll /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d %windir%\System32\qmgr.dll

Reboot again and then try once more to start BITS. It should work properly now, but in the unlikely event that it fails again, run the following command and then hit Enter:

Reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup

Reboot once more and then do the following.

Go to this link and install the  IE8 cumulative December update:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=41404

If you use IE7, use this link instead:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=41442

Finally, go to the Windows Update site and you should be able to download normally.

Yes correct about the copy and paste run commands.

See this linked page for the basis of what follows below

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916251/en-us

I think I may see the problem.  For the final command

    Reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup

Let's try doing this manually typing the instruction at a command prompt and making note the command is case sensitive

    1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
    2. At the command prompt, type the following command,

    Reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup

         and then click OK:

         3. Restart the computer, and then try to manually start BITS.

Note Set the BITS Startup type to "Automatic" instead of "Manual" as soon as you resolve this problem. To change the Startup type, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
    2. Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
    3. In the Startup type box, click Automatic, and then click OK.

    If that doesn't work .....

I would try Dougs registry merge next.

See this other thread linked for some more information and a link for Dougs reg file

    Keith,

thankls a lot for the very fast reply.

Unfortunately I did all that already. And I reactivated  Automatic Updates in services.msc

    When I run (execute)

    Reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS\Parameters /v ServiceDll /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d %windir%\System32\qmgr.dll

    and reboot

error message ist still Error 2: cannot find the file specified when trying to start BITS

When I then and then run (execute)

    Reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup

    and reboot

error message ist still Error 2: cannot find the file specified when trying to start BITS

Same after installing the Dec. patch for IE8

This is what is driving me crazy as it seems not to work for me.

Just as a matter of interest : Whewn I run the above command it is correct that I copy and paste the command as diplayed included the words "Reg gap add gapHKL........" ??

After entering the above long commands and confirming with "OK" the activity looks different from runnig the previous runs regsvr32qmgr.dll and the other .dll file. There I have seen a real activity. When I enter the above long commands a small black window pops up for a quarter of a second- thats all.

    Any ideas how to proceed?

Best regards..... and a nice last day of 2013

    Gerd

Gerd do not deactivate Automatic Updates in services.msc because the process is used for both automatic and manual updates.  Only turn off automatic updates in control panel > automatic updates

Gerd do not worry about finding the path as it will not be found as a specific file but is one of many processes associated with svchost that is found in system32, but more importantly it is qmgr.dll found in system32 and other files needed for reinstalling BITS from the qmgr.inf file found in the inf folder.

You are nearly finished with the BITS reinstall procedure if you are seeing error 2 as you describe.

Complete the procedure as specified by Xircal in the following part of his instructions:

My note to Gerd, you may skip this next step since you have already installed the cumulative security update for IE8 for December.

Go to this link and install the IE8 cumulative December update:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=41404

If you use IE7, use this link instead:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=41442

Finally, go to the Windows Update site and you should be able to download normally.

I have exactly the type problem describesd here:  about 100% CPU covery caused by automatic MS updates for WIN XP 32 bit. If I am deactivating this service it's OK but I am unable to start the update service manually.,

BITS still does not seem to work properly although I did all the fixes described in post 2 of the thread created by Xircal multiple times. When I try to change BITS in "Service" to manually and try to start it, it constantly gives me error message: Error 2: cannot find the file specified.

In addition I installed sercive pack 3 again and update IE8 with the December patch

    .

I can see BITS in the service section. The path in the tab where you can actvate / deactivate this service where it is looking for the correct file is C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs. If I look this WINDOWS/sytem32 folder up manually there is indeed no no file named svchost.exe -k netsvcsor svchost.exe . Just a file svhost (without file ending .exe) is sitting there. This file is described as  file Version 5.1.2600.5512 Generic Host Process for Win32 Services.

I spent hours and hours trying to fix this bug. I completely ran out of ideas. My computer knowledge is very limited.

Does anyone has an idea how I can proceed?

    Any help is really appreciated.

    Kind regards

    Gerd (Germany)
