An update to Movie Maker 2012 was just released today. It lowers the hardware requirements back to DirectX 9, so you might see if you can run it. There are more details in the pinned post. The version number is 16.4.3504.0912.  The details are also at the beginning of this (now very long) post.

So if you had DirectX 9 hardware that worked for WLMM 2011, give Movie Maker 2012 a go again.

Hello LD,

This issue affects the following versions of Movie Maker:

·         Windows Live Movie Maker 2011

·         Windows Movie Maker 2012

Here's what's happening:

1)

Movie Maker makes heavy use of video and graphics acceleration capabilities provided by a computer's video card to decode and encode video files and render effects, transitions and text. Sometimes video card drivers (the software that allows Windows and Movie Maker to interact with the video card) have issues that prevent Movie Maker from working correctly.

The following video cards and corresponding driver versions below have been identified as having issues that prevent Movie Maker 2011 and Movie Maker 2012 from working correctly. Movie Maker will not start with the following video cards and driver combinations.

To resolve the issue, install the latest video card driver version.

    Hi Bobby

Last night I was happily editing using Movie Maker 2012 on a Core i5 with Nvidia 550 card (all within MM specs). This morning a Windows Update set of patches got installed automatically and now the machine will not run MM, even though I have updated the graphics driver afresh direct from Nvidia and checked the version of Direct X (11 is being used).

The update pulled down IE11 and the following updates:

Any ideas why Windows Update could break Moviemaker?

    Thanks

    Tim
