An update to Movie Maker 2012 was just released today. It lowers the hardware requirements back to DirectX 9, so you might see if you can run it. There are more details in the pinned post. The version number is 16.4.3504.0912.  The details are also at the beginning of this (now very long) post.

So if you had DirectX 9 hardware that worked for WLMM 2011, give Movie Maker 2012 a go again.

Hello LD,

This issue affects the following versions of Movie Maker:

·         Windows Live Movie Maker 2011

·         Windows Movie Maker 2012

Here's what's happening:

1)

Movie Maker makes heavy use of video and graphics acceleration capabilities provided by a computer's video card to decode and encode video files and render effects, transitions and text. Sometimes video card drivers (the software that allows Windows and Movie Maker to interact with the video card) have issues that prevent Movie Maker from working correctly.

The following video cards and corresponding driver versions below have been identified as having issues that prevent Movie Maker 2011 and Movie Maker 2012 from working correctly. Movie Maker will not start with the following video cards and driver combinations.

To resolve the issue, install the latest video card driver version.

2)

If you are running on DirectX 9 hardware, please ensure that you have installed the Windows Update for DirectX 9 support available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2741355, and that you are running the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012.

To verify that you have the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012, please do the following:

1.     In Movie Maker, press Alt + F on your keyboard to open the File menu

2.     Select About Movie Maker

3.     Verify that the version number is 16.4.3505.0912.

The latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012 can be downloaded at http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials-movie-maker-get-started

 Hope this helps,

Here is a "Joe Customer" with some experince (50 years of hardware and software manufacturing and use) agreeing with AlmondWine that problem handling procedures with this issue is a disaster.

I spent 1.5 hours trying to find graphics card updates and when then found that my update is not needed, therefore I have a dead  WLMM and do not know what to do

Disaster #2 is that sowtware in Windows code was updated in such way as to disable thousands of users of Windows with WLMM.

Disaster #3 is that in general Windows has Problems with handling of errors due to Windows.   Here are three things that when an error occurs Windows needs to provide in the displayed error message

    1. What version of WLMM do I have? The program needs to identify itself.
    2. Where and how do I find which graphics card I have, I do not play with my graphics card every day, this is first time in 40 years?
    3. Apparently other people refer to this problem as “Error code c945000e” but my WLMM does not have an error code!

I admire Microsoft's organization that handles User Problems, they are handicaped by lack of basic tools and procedures.  What is needed is an architectural enhancement of error capture, error identification and a user-oriented procedures.

Not having those will lead to formidably complex product that will be impossible to service.

    ESG

    I am still having problems

I have gone through everything and it says that all my cards and software are up to date

but I still get the message saying it can't start because my video driver needs updating, but if I go to update it, it say that it is up to date and even from your site I have download the driver and it says its the latest version.
