You can also get some information from your mobile network provider. That can be the provider from whom you bought your phone or in case you have a so called country variant the provider from whom you bought your SIM card. I find it difficult to make a comparison between Apple and Nokia and in particular between ios and symbian. In the course of time Nokia has brought a large number of different models on the market. These models differ in hardware configuration and in some cases substantially. I see ios for iphone and ipad more as one software family. The most recent ios6 has not brought big changes. I'm not judging the ios firmware and according to the rules of this forum I'm not allowed to do that. The variety in the firmware for the different symbian models will make it more time consuming to keep the users of Nokia symbian phones happy. Nokia has a long history as a builder of mobile phones. I have no inside information concerning the commitments between Nokia and the vendors of mobile phones, including the big network operators. For instance, I don't how the responsibility for a reliable (network) operating system is divided between Nokia and the network operators. Apple may have other commitments in that area. Missing the necessary background information I'm not able to make a proper judgment about the quality of the update roll out policy of Nokia and Apple. Cheers.

Thanks for your quick response.  Now, at least, I understand how it is going to be. I'll await for the notification from Nokia which will announce that the update is available for my N8.I'm sorry but I have lost my patience and I've got from Nokia Romania was generic answers...I will never write about this matter. I'll just wait.

First the aim of this "forum" is to give help, information and support on a peer to peer basis. In other words the members are the participants. Nokia representatives can react on subjects, but they don't have any obligation. The bottleneck of the roll out of firmware updates were and are the country variants and the branded variants in these countries. The strategy for the roll out of these variants is the responsibility of the Nokia authorities in each country and can therefore differ from each other. Nokia will never give information about the agreements made between the local Nokia authorities and the involved carriers. The progress or the lack of progress of the carriers approval procedure will not be made public either. Country variants can be rolled out just as easy as the vanilla phones, but in general this will never happen, because this can create a discrepancy between branded and unbranded phone users within a country. What you ask from Nokia is to make public what Nokia wants to maintain as an internal job. I guess you will not get the information you're asking for.

can some of the more experienced members explain the difference between this and the ios6 release that was advertised for release yesterday and was available as advertised and now in use by my wife on her phone?

surely they must be subject to operator approvals, etc? Nokia can't be different in this way, can they?
