Windows update will not work the error is 80244004

This is the top search when googling 80244004.

Through searching the web I noticed everyone with this specific error was using eset, and so was I. One person even uninstalled eset and that fixed it, but that is not an option for me.

Go into ESET Advanced Setup

Web and email -> Web access and antiphishing protection -> HTTP,HTTPS

HTTPS scanner setup -> HTTPS filtering mode

Select "Do not use HTTPS protocol checking"

You may need to restart, but that is the only thing that got windows update to work for me. The automated fix tool, resetting windows update, reinstalling windows update, and all the other normal stuff didn't when I got 80244004.

2. Have you made any software or hardware changes on your computer prior to this issue?

Internet protection module 1041 addressing the Windows Update issue is now available on pre-release servers.

This new internet protection module resolved all my issues.

This issue is caused by a recent security update of the Windows Update Agent. Further attempts for update will fail if the https communication is scanned by 3rd party software.

There are several ways how to solve it:

1, if you use v5.2 or Endpoint, a fix will be distributed automatically to all users (there will be a KB article at http://kb.eset.com with instructions for Endpoint users who update from a mirror).

2, disable SSL scanning

3, set the SSL scanner to "Ask about non-visited sites" mode and run Windows Update. When you are prompted about the certificate, exclude it from scanning. Then you can switch to "Always scan SSL protocol" while ticking the "Apply created exceptions based on certificates" box.
