In Chrome 37.x go to chrome://flags and disable DirectWrite. That's the first thing i did with this update.

I did a clean install of Windows 8 RTM when it became available.
The blurry font rendering that plagued the Preview versions has remained.
It is particularly bad in IE10 and Office 2013.
No amount of adjustment with Clear Type tuner helps much.
I have tried all the fixes recommended like ticking "use Software rendering instead of GPU rendering" in IE10 and in Options in Office 2013.
It makes absolutely no difference.
I installed Windows 8 on completely different hardware to check if it was a graphics card issue. The poor font rendering was still there.
I am currently dual booting Windows 7 and 8 on the same PC. Fonts in Windows 7 remain perfectly clear. In windows 8 they are so bad, the OS is basically unusable.
How do I get readable fonts in Windows 8?
Hardware: ASUS P8Z77-V PRO, Intel Core i7 3770K, ASUS Radeon HD7770 graphics, Samsung Syncmaster 2443BW 24 inch monitor.

2013-04-28T15:24:52+00:00 I am completely flabbergasted by the whole Windows-8 & Office-2013 issues. I am a business owner and power user. My desktop/laptop needs to behave like one and not like a tablet. This is so outrageous that it almost seems like some sort of joke. Doesn't Microsoft make most of its money via corporate licensing? Do they think for one moment that corporations are going to start swiping tablets to run mission critical software?
As far as the Office-2013 debacle, I went ahead and installed Office-2010 instead. That was a project in itself trying to get a greater than 3-year old piece of software back on my latest laptop. I was successful in the end though and much happier now. What the future will hold though, remains to be seen.
Office 2013 suffers from 3 major flaws that I detected in my short attempt to use it:
- The UI/look-feel is horrible. All colors/subtleties are gone.
- The in-message text/fonts are blurry and not crisp (per this thread).
- When deleting messages from inbox, inbox does not refresh right away. You need to move the cursor. Even then it moves you back to the beginning of your inbox.
Very disappointed and perplexed Microsoft customer!

But perhaps Microsoft can't use the internet for searching.

2013-04-27T14:23:56+00:00 I found a solution that seems to be working at least for me. When I bought my new computer with Windows 8 in March it had a HDMI port to which I connected a HDMI cable to my monitor. I had used a DVI cable with my previous Windows 7 computer as it had no HDMI port. My old computer had crashed but I am using the same monitor. I thought HDMI was more advanced than DVI.
Today I tried hooking up my monitor with my old DVI cable and the fonts are now crystal clear. I am not an expert on this but perhaps HDMI is geared more toward videos and not text.

2013-04-26T14:29:21+00:00 It only works on software that doesn't use directwrite. Ie 10, office 2013, and metro use directwrite, so it can't fix those.
How Microsoft can not respond to an issue that affects the day to day use of their two top software revenue generators (office and windows) is beyond me. This SINGLE THING keeps me from buying or recommending office 2013.
