Runtime error for atibtmon.exe when disconnecting AC power cord

Everytime I disconnect my AC power cord Windows 8 shows a Erro Dialog:

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\WINDOWS\system32\atibtmon.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Anyone having the same problem?

Any hotfix for this?

Vari bright option:

Power -> Power Play -> uncheck Enable Vari-Bright

Unchecking the "Vari Bright" option in the ATI Catalyst Control Center resolved the issue for me as well.  It seems this option dims the brightness of the display when unplugged; however, I believe Windows also does this (or, at least it does on my Dell XPS 16).  Perhaps two programs attempting to essentially do the same thing are the cause of the atibtmon issue?

I encountered this problem with my Pavilion DV6 after upgrading to W8 64bit as well and it's more irritating than it ought to be.  For what it's worth though, I opened  the AMD Vision Engine Control Center and disabled the "Vari Bright" option under the Power tab and that seemed to fix getting the error message every time my laptop is unplugged.  Doesn't fix the underlying problem and will will decrease my unplugged-time a bit, but I can live with that.

Thanks for the legwork though, Amiarage.  Looks like we;ll need to content ourselves with waiting for ATI to fix it.

    I havent been able to completely divorce Cortana but I do have her on a short and studded leash which helps me to keep her on her knees, heres how ...

    Open your settings (type settings in the Cortana search box, click (Start Settings) then click the back button in the settings window) .

    Systematically work through all topics and look at all settings.

    Disable any setting which allow privileges to Cortana.

    Youll also see a bunch of scary Privacy settings which you may like to switch off.

    Then install Firefox or Chrome and set as your default browser.

    Then install the Bing2Google browser addon (aka Bing-Google).

    Cortana is now your biarch ;)

    Same problem on a Laptop (HP) running Windows 10 and upgraded from Windows 7.

    Rather than delete the ATIBTMON.EXE file in System32, I renamed it (thereby disabling it). So no harm done if that was ineffective.  This seems to have worked. Of course, remember or write down the new name in case you choose to return to the old name.

    The HP laptop has no menu choice about dimming the monitor, which other people have suggested can be "unchecked."

    Now if I could just find a way to banish Cortana from my Windows 10 installation, I might make it do some work. I can't take that pseudo-personal chatty talk. I know how to do searches without "her" help.
