Num Lock not turned on when booting Windows 8

Hi everyone,

After turning on my system after loading Windows 8, the Num Lock does not turn on automatically as it is set in my BIOS.  I followed suggestions given in the forums and changed the registry entries for the InitialKeyboardIndicators key in the registry to have a value of 2.  This still does not work.

What I noticed is that if I sign off in Windows 8 and then select shut down after signing out, the num lock light will be on after rebooting my system.  However, if I go into settings and power off directly without signing off, num lock is turned off when I reboot my PC.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Try:

Control Panel => Hardware and Sound => Power Options => System Settings

Uncheck (Turn on fast startup).

I cannot find the suggested path in Windows 8.1's Control Panel.

See my hints on page 1 of this thread?   There is no direct path there.   You must take the detour via the "Choose what the power buttons do" link.   That's what I described as:   Win-X O, Tab, Tab, Enter.

BTW I am now using the W8.2 on Surface RT and although it has the above link it doesn't have any way of achieving the ultimate objective (of turning off "Fast Startup").   I do remember that I would have been using a real W8.1 to make my observations.  However, since this is essentially a BIOS function I now suspect you are more likely to be able to do something similar via the Advanced Restart function.   So, see if instead you can do what you need via  Win-w Advanced Startup Enter (and then Restart from there).

    Another thing I've noticed is that the keyboard's Key Repeat Rate is always dropping out. pretty much anytime I restart or even put my laptop to sleep, the repeat rate drops pretty much to the lowest setting. when i go to check the settings in the control panel, they always look exactly as I left them, and once I re-click the slider and leave it all the way up (so exactly where it appeared when I opened the settings) and Apply it, it'll work fine again. but if I don't repeat that process every single time it behaves as if it's set to a much lower setting (I forget what the factory setting was, but it's either reverting back to that or setting it to the lowest setting), which screws up typing (specifically backspacing) as well as page scrolling and all that other stuff. 

    is there something about the 8.1 drivers or the Fast Startup option that is just totally screwing up all the user settings? like i'm imagining that every time I start up, something is overriding my personal settings for the factory settings. as if Fast Startup isn't able to remember the settings you choose, and instead just overrides them for what it knows from the factory settings...

    also, as an update: the regedit changing the values to "2" has been working for me for a few months now

    Me too.   Evidently that is a mistake.   ;  }

    Here's a keystroke alternative to what we are being told:   Win-X, O, Tab, Tab, Enter

    However at this point apparently we could take a useful detour into the Help...

    F1, Ctrl-f fast Enter Esc Backtab, Tab, Enter, CursorDown a few.

    See:  "Fast startup is a setting that helps your PC start up faster after shutdown." ...

    Either close the Help (Alt-F4) or switch back to the Control Panel you started it from (Alt-Tab)

    Now, unless you are already running as an Admin you probably need to press Enter in order to

    "Change settings that are currently unavailable"

    Return from that.

    Now, HTH do we get to the bottom of the window?  Perhaps maximize it to see the problem:  Alt-Space,X

    Oh, I know:   Alt-d, Backtab.   (See where we're going yet? <w>)  Then a bunch more Backtabs where you could do another detour with some Help (e.g. press Enter on Learn More)

    Hope you can see the target checkbox now?   <eg>

    The usability of this panel is atrocious.

    Thanks for this walk through. This one actually worked for me too. It's impossible to find even the simplest functions in Windows 8. Garbage.

    OK, I do not know if you found the solution, but this what worked for me.

    Basically, you have to navigate to regedit and change all the values for parameters that start with "InitialKeyboardIndicators". The values should be set to 2.

    But just follow the instructions in link provided and you should be good to go.
